(Si, I have. I don't like it when people neglect and treat a character badly. Is that how you would treat someone in reality? No? Then why do it do a creation? They have feelings too. And on top of that, the whole points thing? They needed to fix the account up to accommodate for changes. I knew I had points I wasn't going to waste on commissions from my "pal" since she seems to be ignoring my stuff. But from what little I know about the account... Italy's been given crap and I'm against character/muse humiliation)ย

We thank you a lot for that. All of us. I agree, the characters do have feelings and they react accordingly. It's what makes them so interesting and relatable.

*casually pops the bubbles* You can know the girls later.
And no thanks required. I'm a hero type. We do that sort of thing.
Back on the subject of characters. I'm sorry. Just because they are things on your computer or in your mind or wherever... It does not make them "imaginary pieces of junk" as some would call them. And if they were truly physically there in front of you... Would you say such awful things? I bet not! And besides... Who's to say if they are real or fake? Every time we create something, that universe becomes real. And I think that they know what people in our universe say about them. And that makes me sad. How much do you think they hurt because they see something that should be representing them get yelled at, fussed at. ignored... They aren't much different than us. They have feelings too.

I'm sorry. I remember my old Digimon group when we wouldn't be RP'ing and Kira or someone would randomly yell *pops bubbles* "We're not Role Playing! We don't need them right now!
Well, you're welcome. ^_^
You guys plus my gf and like maybe a few others are the only ones who seem to get this theory.

Amenrenet In reply to AskOrlenaLouisiana [2013-08-11 18:56:07 +0000 UTC]
Oooh so it's an in joke XD
Anyone who is a decent writer should be able to understand the theory. The most dramatic plot in the world will fall flat if the characters are static, like figurines with pre-painted faces...puppets dancing to a master's will. The reader will feel detached. It's the subtle nuances...the inner turmoil and tiny quirks that really define a character and set them apart from all others. This is what makes a character come alive, when you realize that there's something more behind the mask. That there's insecurities, fears, hopes and dreams all hidden beneath the surface. All this makes it possible to identify with a character, and when that happens you can almost feel the emotions as if they were your own. And it's even stronger when it comes to a roleplay. The true beauty of playing a role is to forget yourself for the moment, and to become the character for whom you are writing...to transcend reality and feel as they feel, to act as they act. When that happens, for a brief moment in time...they live, and we are the ones that give them life. It's a life that is gone once the moment is over and roleplay ends...but unlike other deaths these lives can be reawakened. All it takes is a reader with a willing mind and an open heart, and an entire world can be reborn anew.

Like re-reading your favorite book over again. I think a fun quirk to a character is when they proclaim they have no flaw, nothing can scare them, and even in flashbacks they appear to be happy and cheerful. But then there's the moment when they're all alone and they start going "But if I'm so perfect... Why am I around these other people? Can I really feel these emotions?" And this perfect mask begins to crack and break and we see what really goes on behind closed doors as it were.

Yes. To suddenly be confronted with a situation that shows there's more to a character than you previously thought gives them that much more depth, makes them that much more believable and relatable. It challenges you to rethink what you thought you knew about them, their motives, their morals. And real people can be equally complex, if not more so.

What about a situation though where a person purposely sets up a situation to hurt a character? I've met some people who, in some wierd way, express their love for a certain character by putting him/her through hell.

Well... Take the EVENT I ran Orlena through. She ran in there because Fiammetta told her to stop existing. She fell so far under that spell that she almost did vanish. Had Flavio not shown up when he did...ย
And then there's Fiammetta herself. She's the result of a voodoo curse and she curses her own existence. It's why she usually yells at Orlena.

A lot of people tell me most of my characters are Mary Sues. But how many people have their vocals poisoned by a curse in which they need surgery only to find that the hospital is run by a street gang? Or a full-fledged living person being born as a result of a curse and becoming an assassin that takes out lowlifes to ease their own internal suffering?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Amenrenet In reply to AskOrlenaLouisiana [2013-08-12 00:37:58 +0000 UTC]
There's different types of Sues. It all depends, not just on the backstory but on how they're played as well. Those both sound like unique character backgrounds but I'm rather poor at spotting Sues beyond the really obvious "Godmod Sue". You know the one...you can riddle them with bullets, and run over them with a steamroller, but the character will straight up IGNORE the injuries or shrug it off. A couple characters in our roleplays are gods or goddesses with vast power (because a former member of our group was into that sort of thing) and you'd probably think that being a straight up god or goddess is a guaranteed Sue status...but these are more like the ancient Greek gods in that they are vulnerable to the right things. Erde, for example, will burn out her body and kill it if she stays in her true "goddess" form for too long, so she spends most of her time in a weaker, more childlike form that has less command of her powers in exchange for being more 'energy efficient.'

AskOrlenaLouisiana In reply to Amenrenet [2013-08-12 00:46:41 +0000 UTC]
Omg... I had a character that fit that description. Well... Almost. You had to have her protector say "Tami, Goddess of the Cosmosis Spiral" bc that was the name of the Gods Realm in the world of the Eza Gia Galaxy. She was an 8 year old child who was gifted with the goddess power only because if she hadn't been...She would have died in the birth blood when she was born. SHe was also hated for it. When she stays in goddess mode too long, she'll not only get stuck in her native tongue (Cosian) but she'll revert to her 8 year old form and be bed ridden for a good while.ย

Interesting.
Erde will straight up die if she burns out her body. Though her soul will get reborn. Her child form is stuck at 5 years old...and she's in a relationship with Japan XD That looks hilarious at times... a 5 year old and a guy who's almost 2700! Nations tend to like Erde though, as she's an Earth goddess, so her energy is quite pleasant to them.

I can show you what she looks like. She's got a model of her goddess form, but it would take really advanced PMX skills to make her like she really is. Like something on par with what the Japanese modelers make.

Thanks. How I wanted to do her model? Have the seasons gradually transition between one another like with a slider. So from spring to summer for example her clothes would shift, and her hair would get longer and more colorful, and the decorative 'wings' on her back would grow out.

AskOrlenaLouisiana In reply to Amenrenet [2013-08-12 13:01:52 +0000 UTC]
I have both. And fail at both. I somehow delete facials, when the model moves, her head looks detached from her body, come to find out it's a weighting issue (like I even know what that means).... ย I need to edit the pmx Romano to have a tux. There's a wedding soon.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Amenrenet In reply to AskOrlenaLouisiana [2013-08-12 19:25:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, PMD english can't open PMX models at all, I know that much. Facials can get deleted if you remove all the mesh related to them. And weight/rigging is where you tell the mesh how tightly or loosely it follows a bone's movement. Smooth weighting is key to making the mesh flow well. Though some objects are firmly attached to one bone and one bone only. Are you sure the head bone moves with the rest of the body though? That could also cause the issue you describe. The parent bone for the head bone needs to be the neck bone. And then the head itself needs to be 100% weighted to the head bone, with hair being weighted from the head, to whatever hair bones there might be.
Good luck finding a tux though. Male parts seem to be absurdly difficult to come by.

AskOrlenaLouisiana In reply to Amenrenet [2013-08-12 19:40:35 +0000 UTC]
Oh I know that first part. And yeah. Her head and body move. It's her clothes. They don't move with her like a normal model. And I didn't read that in the tutorial. I just read "This is how you place the hair on the head. See it's done?" None of these stupid tutorials say shit about "weighting" or "rigging".
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Amenrenet In reply to AskOrlenaLouisiana [2013-08-12 21:20:14 +0000 UTC]
Place a part and be done with it does work but only if the part you're dealing with has rigging already. It's possible the clothes and hair weren't rigged. Another possibility is if the bones didn't have the same names, they wouldn't merge and so you'd have two head bones, for example, one that follows the body and will move the face, an the other just floats there and the hair is rooted to it. They need the same Japanese name to merge. And it can be tricky to tell there's two bones there if they overlap just right. a bone fix is way easier than a rigging fix.

My computer does not read japanese once the file's unzipped. (unless it's pmx editor or some of the other things) It looks like this:ย รขJรขรดรข^รขรฎรขรซ. Programs it'll read. Texture files or motion files are that nonsense gibberish. But I was trying to make a me model and The hair texture didn't work right, the eyes look off, when I deleted the sleeves off the outfit I "deleted 44 facials" so now she can't make very many faces, her clothes don't move with the body... ANd then the resizing i have to do with the clothes and everything and there's STILL skin going through? And then there's things that don't fit... I have lots of issues.

Amenrenet In reply to AskOrlenaLouisiana [2013-08-15 18:21:33 +0000 UTC]
Wow. Well I know the funky letters has to do with the app locale of your computer, something about it showing accented vowels if it's set to any country but Japanese. Something to do with the extraction process. If you put new textures on a model you often have to remap them. I'm no expert but a very basic way to do it is, on the window with the model, select the mesh you're trying to texture and then go Edit>Vertex>Special UV Direction and say yes to the popup box (semi-english version btw, no clue what it says on full japanese but should be in same place) Then you can use the last tab on the control popup menu (C button on the semi-english version, on the toolbar below File/Edit/View/Info) to stretch and skew and shift the texture while you have the mesh selected. My advice for the facials would be try opening the outfit alone and see how many facials are on it. Then you can use the vertex/mesh menu (V button, right next to the C button) to check in-depth.ย Toggle the dot from MA to FA and you can check which vertices belong to what facials when you check each box. Resizing to fit tends to be the most painful, and sometimes with skin you just have to separate the mesh and delete it completely. Hope that helps.

It does, but reading and doing are two different things I'm afraid. However, I think I'm getting better ad editing. So maybe model building will be easier.

Making stuff from scratch is hard in PMD, you can only make basic shapes. Cube, sphere, ring, cylinder, flat sheet, or text. You have to be REALLY freaking creative. But if you do it right.... fav.me/d5zuuei fav.me/d4q2omf

If you can figure out how, you can manipulate simple objects into a lot of different things. My latest deviation is a stage WIP that, so far, is all made from scratch other than a few textures and sph/spa files.
