Any bitmap can be used as background in all common programs (Daz, Carrara, poser, etc). The other option is to use your template as object.
Here I upload an example of how the render is with your template as background

Here in Obj format is universal for all programs, always the mtl file must be in the same directory.

In both cases you must set the camera to keep the proportion of the template (square or 1:1).

In the second option (using the obj file) must accommodate the relative distance or size in proportion to occupy the top of the screen.

I think the first option is the most simplest

But I was wondering...Is a week enough time to make 3D stuff with four random words ?
I mean it must take a LOOOOT of time to create modeles and then find the composition, don't you think ?

I can adapt the concept to "Photomanipulation artists" but I'm doubting about 3D artists right now
I guess 3D artist already know the basics of drawing so maybe they can draw too...I don't know

As a 3D artist, what do you think about it ?

Depends on the type of permit, have the participant for the contest. If the use of models free license will allow a week is more than enough to make up the scene and render time.

If participants will be from scratch, is different and depend on the complexity of the model, for example. A glass cup can be done easily in a few minutes, a platypus take longer. Also would depend on the luck of having useful models for other previous work.

Not necessarily a 3d artist dominates the bases of traditional drawing, 3d art is more like a combination of sculpture and photography.

The concept is pretty young for now, so I have to think about a lot of things in order to make it more interesting for all kind of artists
I'll tell you later if I'm able to create one for 3D artists

Oh and do you know some websites where people can download free 3D ressources ?
I may have to includes some links If I managed to do it ^^
