You have a good eye and camera phones can do a fine job.  Several of the images on my feed are done with an iPhone.  Look at some free apps that you can add that give you more exposure control with your phone.  Consider using the HDR feature of the phone as well.  
Keep taking pictures and develop your eye even more.  Read up on composition and look at the classic composition ideas then figure out how you can deviate from that to make your picture better.
Take lots of pictures.

Phones today do an excellent job of taking pictures.  Nothing to apologize for there.  
Your Ginger Tree shot is great.  You go the lighting right and captured the intricate interplay of the tree and the texture of the bark.  WEll done.
