I would kill for that Majora's Mask set, not gonna lie. Your quilts are absolutely amazing!! I'm looking to start making small quilt blocks of characters, maybe expanding into big quilts one day and you have certainly inspired me. Please keep up the great work!

I used a grid to plot out my Kirby quilt; have you ever used grids? I'm not good at math and I'd REALLY like to make my own Majora's Mask, but it didn't work out on the grid I had. How do you go about tackling the 8 bit quilts? Especially the Pokemon, I HAVE to make a Blaziken quilt like your Tyranitar.

I used to use photoshop and a grid system, but now I map it out in Google Excel documents. You can set conditional formatting to have the block show up as specific color and quickly type in a letter to each square. It limits you to only 9 colors, but it helps me get the base design and then I go in and customize designs later to have more colors or just kind of wing it during the actual piecing it together. Oh, here is a youtube video of me showing the making of a quilt - maybe it'll make more sense that way! (youtu.be/0hTd2DPzSJ8 ) For Pokemon I always use Bulbapedia to see all the different sprite versions of the pokemon and can pick out which gen might have the best design, so I'd look at this gallery for inspiration! archives.bulbagarden.net/wiki/…

Wow that looks WAYYYYYY easier than using a grid. But my problem is how would you make it proportional? A premade grid makes the proportion sizes a lot easier to match (my Kirby quilt will be 60 x 80 inches) so do you just make it however big it ends up being or do you do a lot of math to get it proportional to existing blanket sizes? Like, instead of using 1 inch blocks equal 4 inch blocks on the quilt itself, do you use different measurements?

I'm not sure if this is more clear then all that garbage ramblings I just did. Here's a blog I did that kinda broke it down step by step how I figure it out?

Ok, so in my quilts I use 1 square for each pixel. If you want to try and consolidate them on your own blanket - its not a bad idea - but I try to stay true to the pixel look and have each one represented. so in the case of your Kirby blanket that would mean 80 rows with 60 blocks each. I must say the complexity of your design is commendable - I'm sure it'll look great! I usually try to stay under 50 pixels (because I'm lazy). So I'm guessing your blanket is for a queen sized bed? Queens are usually 86inches square. I'm not sure if you'd want to change your design to be square, but its probably easier to add extra to the sides to make it the right shape then crop it to be shorter. So I'd take 86inches and divide it by 80 (the amount of blocks you have in a row).
86 / 80 = 1.075
SO add .5 (the hem allowance) to that number and round up to get 1.5! I'd recommend working with 1.5inch squares for each of your pixels.
Its small squares but if you make them any larger - then you'd get a very large quilt. The first quilt I made I just randomly chose the squares to be 3 inches square. It was a hilarious mess as I kept sewing them together and the first row was very long. I kept thinking "Maybe there is a nerd out there with a king sized bed?" haha .. but eventually I admitted defeat and make a different design.
For squares that small I normally don't sew them each one by one. I sew longer strips that represent multible pixels - maybe you can see what I mean on the Yoshi Mario Crib quilt (8bithealey.deviantart.com/art/… ). If I have 3 green in a row, instead of sewing 3 1.5 inch squares together, I'd sew a strip of fabric that was 1.5inches tall and 3.5inches long to respected that cluster. Ugh... I worry I'm getting confusing. I don't want to over complicate it. Quilts are simple at the end of the day. just sewing squares together.

No no, you're not confusing. I can see what you're saying. 1.5 inch squares seem awfully small though; the way I'm doing my Kirby quilt is just enlarging the grid by 4 times to get the quilt itself, but maybe I'll learn the hard way what you're trying to tell me. xD 1.5 would definitely be better for a Majora's Mask quilt.
Oh yes!! I can definitely see what you mean by combining multiple squares into one rectangle. That would make things a lot smaller on the to-do scale.
(On another note, I tried the google doc sheets? It didn't work out so well |D I went back to using a really big grid and just doing the sprite and worrying about the math later. Or experiment to see how big it gets. But I'll definitely keep the 1.5 inch blocks in mind.)
Thank you so much for your advice!!!

8bitHealey In reply to Hinata-teh-Lefty [2015-01-16 08:40:27 +0000 UTC]
Yeah - 1.5 is small. I didn't want to discourage you though! I like using 2.5 inch squares if I can. but that limits you to a 44inch square canvas. That's the tricky thing with 8bit quilting - ambition is a scary and time consuming thing. I think because its a personal project you won't mind the extra challenge. Because I make most of these quilts and sell them - I don't like complex designs because nobody would want to pay for them haha -.-()

Hinata-teh-Lefty In reply to 8bitHealey [2015-01-16 21:45:09 +0000 UTC]
You didn't discourage me at all. It just seemed surprising, but realistic. xD I think that'll be the best way to get Majora done since I made such a big sprite. I used one of the sprites a lot of people used for perler beads, but I changed up the colors a bit. I'm also doing the shaded sprite so it'll be a lot more fabric to buy, but gosh does it look cool.
Just curious, how do you do the backing of the quilt? Do you just use one or two solid pieces of fabric and piece them together? I think I get how to piece it; you just sew like two 2.5 (or however long) pieces together and then just trim off the excess or do strips or something. That probably wouldn't be a very pretty back though...

8bitHealey In reply to Hinata-teh-Lefty [2015-01-17 06:13:02 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I buy 5 yards of fabric, cut it in half and sew them together so it 90 inches square (for a queen, a twin is only 4 yards). Then I put down a layer of batting and then the quilt. The bottom layer should have around 4 inches on each side. I fold the bottom layer other and sew it to the top. Its the easiest/fastest way to finish a quilt. You could also lay all the layers together and then sew a border of whatever you like around the edge. You are right about it being dull, I've been exploring other options. I've been printing fabric at spoonflower.com to make nerdy quilts. It's expensive but definitely adds a nerdy pop of color. These are Mario themed things (i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu… or i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu… ) but its kinda prices to buy so much printed fabric.

AH I see how to do it now. You have been a tremendous help and I will draw you a thing eventually to show my gratitude. x3
Ah yes, spoonflower is terribly expensive, but they have some neat fabrics on there. Both of those would make a super cute backing and I may consider doing something like that.

I messaged you back! I'm so glad you like them. The price of the quilts vary, but once you tell me all your ideas I'll be happy to come up with a custom design and give you a price quote and from there we can tweak the design and you can let me know when you are ready to proceed to production! I'm booked through January with orders, but I'll be opening my store up as soon as I make some progress on my orders! The holidays were rough on me!
