I entered one contest, and was eliminated, didn't make the "finals." It's ironic, because the cover I created is nearly exactly what the brief asked for. However, once the client saw other ideas come in, he/she changed his/her mind. I worked as a graphic designer years ago, and I remember how fickle clients can be. Coming up with a design they like is often just a crap shoot. Used to drive me crazy. Still does, actually! Which makes me think I may just do book covers and offer them for sale, rather than enter contests like this. 

Cathleen Tarawhiti is going to use my thief illustration [fav.me/d71k9tb] , even though it came up short in her poll. So that's nice.

Yes it is hit and miss at 99D and can sometimes be disheartening if one gets a string of rejections but the ones I have won has given me loyal authors who I've gone on to do further work with. Authors who I may have not connected with otherwise. So I guess building a client base is better than nothing at all. Also covers that didn't get selected I keep on file and I've had about 4 covers that were purchased by other clients or used in later 99D comps that were more successful. "Edgewood" was one of those. Didn't get through the first 99comp but I pointed the author of the newer comp to it in my portfolio asking if she liked it and would she want me to submit it rehashed for her competition - which she did... and it won... so go figure?

In Regards the Cathleen Tarawhiti that is good news. She might reconsider using your artwork at some stage or she intends to keep in touch with you for further work. Its a good sign I would think.

Just to clarify, You group is more about pre-designed covers available for use? I am open to commissions and have been participating at the book covers that come up on 99designs website. I win about 1 in 6 entries at the moment. Very competitive but I have formed some good relationships with authors post competitions. I found DA has been a good source of exposure as well and have had few inquiries. What do you advise? I do have several covers that didn't make it through to final rounds on 99desings that are available for purchase but I have not yet made a website for myself to promote these designs.

Predesigned covers, commissioned covers, covers for your own work, covers you made for fun. Anything that's a book cover is the focus. I wanted there to be more interaction between potential clients and designers, but I haven't quite figured out how to really facilitate that besides telling them look at the list and I'll post a journal. A bulk of the submissions is predesigned because some of our members turn them out like there's no tomorrow.

 Just post your unsold covers, slap a price on it (nothing outrageous, I've seen some covers that seriously overpriced), and see if anyone bites and say that you're open for commissions. Submit the covers to a bunch of different groups too so they get some exposure.  You can also advertise in the group journal too.  That's what I would do.

Hello Arty,

Let me know closer to when you are ready to do this. I do charge from my work and it really depends how much work is needed for the final manipulation. I can charge as low as $60-$90 for Ebook covers so not totally out of reach expense wise.
Another solution is getting involved in any of the 'book cover' groups here on Deviant art and offer a competition. Makes sure you have a great brief with the synopsis of your story etc... work in collaboration with a stock providers ie... giving 4-5 stock images you like or would like seen combined in the final designs. You might have to offer the stock owners compensation for any final designs you might want to use after the competition... this can be points or small donation. Offer DA points as the prize to the winners.
Also another option if you have the money is 99Designs.com they run book cover competitions starting at $200. You subject matter would attract a few designers. I've entered a few competitions at 99D and authors can get from 30 to 90 designs depending. Again a good brief, synopsis, character description, any suggestions you have for a vision of your cover, cover size, page count of your story if you want a spine and back cover.
