how was Portugal?

TrajanII In reply to Gipsymoon [2015-09-07 18:45:08 +0000 UTC]

Hi Glenda
Portugal was great as always. I was in Lisbon staying in Estoril. It's a seaside surburb where the deposed monarchs and aristocrats of Europe spent their last days frittering away their fortunes in the Casino 😄
It's got a nice beach and down the coast some excellent seafood restaurants on the way to Guincho if you like good food. The temperature went to 34 deg C for a while then back to the high twenties. I went into the city to buy some shoes and have lunch in my favourite restaurant Nicola which used to be the haunt of depraved writers and artists back in the 18th century  (nothing has changed) Didn't do anything particularly cultural this year but then walking the streets of a city that hasn't changed much since it was captured from the Moors in 1147 is a cultural experience in itself 😁
I heard you had a hurricane in Florida about the same time. Did it affect you much? How is your new house are you near the coast? Are you still studying art? And how is Kirsten and the kids?

Gipsymoon In reply to TrajanII [2015-09-08 20:00:50 +0000 UTC]

The hurricane died down before it got here so we just had some more rain. I rains here everyday for a a few minutes. The house is in the same area. I've been living in (about 45 mins from the beach.) Kirsten and the kids are doing well. All doing well in school. Thanks for asking.
I love visualizing your trips. It sounds like a nice few days, even if you had to work. That will be a nice date too. To go eat and drink at an old writer'/ artist hang out. Yes! Sign me up. The walk alone sounds like a cultural event. (So jealous right now) But also happy for you.  Does your significant other ever get o go with you?

TrajanII In reply to Gipsymoon [2015-09-12 12:28:29 +0000 UTC]

You're lucky Glenda you didn't have to suffer a full on hurricane. When I was in Cuba the advice in the hotel if there is a hurricane coming is to fill your car up with petrol and park it on high ground 😌 Glad to hear that you Kirsten and the kids are keeping well 😊
I was in Estoril a coastal suburbs of Lisbon for a very restful 19 day holiday.
The city centre hasn't changed much since it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. The area around the hill on which St George's castle is built is very medieval and you can imagine yourself walking in the footsteps of the generations of people who've lived on the hill since Phoenician times. The main catederal known as the Se de Lisboa dates from 1150 It's on the windy road to the castle and looks like a Christian fortress but it' stills built on the site of a mosque which was built on top of a Roman temple which was built on the site of a Phoenician temple...lot of history in one spot 😁

He he At school I was crap at history but after I left I became more interested in the subject. Most places in the old world are steeped in history and its nice to see and touch the buildings, streets and monuments left by those who lived before us. I managed to see the archeological excavations at the back of the cathederal in Lisbon and it was very interesting.
The siege and capture of St Georges Castle Lisbon was carried out in July 1147 by a combined army of Portuguese, Anglo-Norman, German, and Flemish knights numbering 20,000 against a defending army of 15,000 Moors. This was during the Second Crusade. The Crusaders who were on their way to the Holy Land made a deal with King Alfonso of Portugal - he let them pillage the city for 3 days after the Moors surrendered then hand over the fortress to him. I guess tahts how things were done in those days

TrajanII In reply to Gipsymoon [2015-09-25 17:35:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes only these days the pillaging is for crude oil
The attackers spent weeks building a large tower to get over the walls of the fortress..... little did they know they could have taken a No 28 tram from the bottom of the hill to the castle gates 😄

Creating and destroying empires is the history of man since we left the cave and started tilling the soil. Believe it or not even though I use the name of a Roman emperor Trajan as my username (there is a logical reason for that  ) I am an anti-imperialist and an anarchist-socialist-republican at heart. Still Alexander the great did achieve a lot (as an imperialist) before his death at 31
