no problem! I didn't comment at the time as I was in the middle of something, but it turned out to be exactly what I was trying to achieve, so thanks a lot for uploading it!

Yep, everything's a-okay! I just haven't been on for a bit, fell out of sync with my DA rhythm or something I tend to do that, whether it's BlenderArtists, DA, or Twitter (or my blog for that matter), I go through little phases where I just don't spend much time there.
I'll be back very shortly though! Probably later today, even - I have over 2200 images in my inbox to deal with

Hi again! Does tagging the sender count?
Also, on a random side note, I've taken to re-watching Death Note in Italian

Eerrr...I don't think that usually counts, no, but your questions are interesting so I'll do a quick one to reply to them LOL

Uh... "It's very difficult to understand, because they talk too fast?"
There are slight similarities to French, so I *think* I was able to figure that one out without resorting to GTranslate
Glad to see you around again, been wondering where you'd gone to

Yeah, that's more or less it
All descendants of Latin seem to have that effect I've had some luck deciphering French phrases like that too
Actually, I've found that Italian seems to be easier coming from a combined reference pool of English & Spanish So I left French after Italian to tackle it from a 3-way reference pool & since Italian is already so much like Spanish...
I've been taking a vacation from dA because of some mid-semester exams but now my college has a... well, long story short, a big mess going on & I took to watching walkthroughs of Metal Gear Rising & wining inFAMOUS 2 & replaying the first one (awesome games btw ) & such
Actually, MGR has got me in a dilemma, I might even write a journal or 2 about it

"**bit about French/Italian/Spanish**"
Yeah, I think because they all have the same base language there's a lot of similarities. It's fun to try and decipher, really, and to notice the differences between French and English. There's a few cross-over expressions and words, so it's really interesting to see where certain expressions come from. For instance there's quite a few specifically Quebec-french words that are basically english words used in everyday conversation, whose pronunciation eventually morphed into their current forms.
As for DA, I actually just took a bit of a vacation from it myself - hence why it took so long for me to reply I of course now have +2000 images in my inbox due to the Realm of Fantasy group Hopefully a few interesting ones will stand out...
Not to mention I have someone asking me about my NES Console model and if it'd be available for use in the Garry's Mod game (based off of Valve's Team Fortress 2, AFAIK) for a project, so I don't know where that'll lead... the model's far from being game-ready, I think I'd have to rebuild most, if not of it...

Mmheh just when you think you're finished there's always something else to do BUT! I'm pretty sure I'm (mostly) free now
Heheh anyway, you know, when I get a 1000+ images in my inbox I just do Select All > Remove. A fresh start
Sadly, I miss a lot of things, but at least I get to keep my sanity
Also, someone wanting to use your model in a game... is actually pretty awesome
Which reminds me I have so much to do in Blender Including testing the new version O.o...
PS: Btw, I've been meaning to ask... Does French have 3 kinds of "to be" like Spanish or 2 like Italian? or more? or one?

"Also, someone wanting to use your model in a game... is actually pretty awesome"
Yeah, that didn't work out unfortunately Model's way too high-poly, and the creators of that particular mod for Garry's Mod (a mod of a mod...I know ) already had plans to model one themselves. The mod itself looks interesting though, so it sorta led to me putting Garry's Mod on my To-Try list
"Heheh anyway, you know, when I get a 1000+ images in my inbox I just do Select All > Remove. A fresh start

Yeah, I've contemplated doing that a few times... however I sorta like just sitting down for an hour and looking through stuff. Get's annoying to have to do so often, I admit, but... meh, I'll find a solution at some point
About the French question... "to be" translates to the verb "être" ("be" would be "soit" since it's imperative, "is" would be "es(t)" since it's a declaration of sorts), which then has variations for each "person" (I, You, He/She. etc.), so you get:
être = raw verb
Je suis
Tu es
Il/Elle est
Nous sommes
Vous êtes
Ils/Elles sont
Those are all sorta netural-present tense - and then there's all the other tenses (in no particular order):
j'/tu/il/elle étais/était (if with "je" & "tu", it ends in "s"), je serai, tu/il/elle sera, nous seront, vous serez, nous étions, vous étiez, ils/elles seront, ils/elles étaient, ils/elles sont, etc...
...sometimes the different tenses can get really crazy with some verbs

& to think I don't even know what Garry's Mod is...
"Yeah, I've contemplated doing that a few times... however I sorta like just sitting down for an hour and looking through stuff."
Actually... I've been having that same feeling lately seems like the number goes up slower when it's already in 4 digits Though that might just be an illusion
&... now I now some French conjugations it's a start
The most usual, necessary & simply handy verbs are always irregular... probably for the simple fact that they are used more often, so they get perverted faster
See, most Spanish-to-English books say that "to be" maps to "ser" & "estar," but taking a closer look, it also maps to "haber" which is used for impersonal subjects... as in "There is a new movie" -> "Hay una nueva película"...
But, curiously, the Italian "essere" maps much closer to "to be" than to it's Spanish would-be equivalent O.o... They even have a particle that maps (sort of) to the obligatory impersonal "there" in English ->"C'è (Ci è) un nuovo film."
Could I have been watching too many tutorials that I'm talking about "texture" mapping in languages?

...I get the feeling the new Comments system doesn't really like the sub html-tag Unless you actually did sub your text that much?
Yeah, I keep getting that feeling too...like once it breaches that (insane) 1k mark, it just continues to sky-rocket. Right now mine's sitting at ~1400, so not too bad - I had 2500 not too long ago, which actually shocked another Deviant I chat with (he had a sort-of jaw-drop moment, was hilarious )
As for Spanish/Italian...sounds about as complicated as French! Really odd you should mention texturing though - I spent most of today reorganizing my textures library and doing Cycles texturing/shader tests
About translation books, I think the main problem is that they probably only focus on the basics, and the rest you sorta have to learn by practising somehow...

Oops I think the problem is with the preview actually
"I had 2500 not too long ago, which actually shocked another Deviant I chat with (he had a sort-of jaw-drop moment, was hilarious )"
Is it really that shocking? I was under the impression many Deviants suffer this kind of inbox-spamming
"As for Spanish/Italian...sounds about as complicated as French! "
Ha senso You know, the descendants of Latin...
If I've found out something about language learning, is that books are only a guideline they sometimes speed up understanding of things that are not easy to extrapolate from context but the actual learning is done by listening, reading & listening, to the language in question. Simple exposure works wonders

MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-08-08 01:03:42 +0000 UTC]
Well, he (=TheDarkOfNight-D ) apparently keeps up with his inbox fairly well, but the difference is he's not +watching the Realm-Of-Fantasy group They're really the main culprits... just stahp already, ROF!
"But the actual learning is done by listening, reading & listening, to the language in question."
Can't speak from experience, but that only makes sense, really. It's like reading about topology theory in an article vs being able to use, apply, and tweak it to work, really And the usage part you might never figure out if you don't try first, too.

"the difference is he's not +watching the Realm-Of-Fantasy group "
Oh... of course... that one really makes the difference
You know, my dad told me he remembers a stage in his childhood where he could understand what people where saying but he could not repeat it.
& it was kind of a revelation when I first realized that was happening to me in Japanese...
It goes after the stage of learning the most basic grammar & a bunch of words. After a while of trying, I managed to repeat some short-to-mid sized phrases & subconsciously learning how they relate the words in them. Then I can start to slowly change some words of those phrases to suit my needs & I start to sort of "babble" like a little kid only I didn't have to learn how to move my tongue at the same time so it wasn't actually "babbling" but I still had to give a fair few seconds of thought to each word...
Might just be a guess but, I think this is how children learn to speak by simple exposure...
I'm still very much a child in Japanese though because I have to learn a bare minimum of about 2000 ideograms to so much as read a newspaper
Italian is so close to Spanish already, but even then, sometimes I find it easier to relate to English or even to Japanese
Actually... I think it might work that way when drawing/painting/modelling/etc. too... see how others do it (or just what it ends up like), then try to mimic it, figure out the little nuances, then tweak a tuo piacimento

MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-08-23 22:41:27 +0000 UTC]
Hmm...that's some interesting points you and your dad brought up. I can't say I remember anything like that when growing up, but it does make sense in a way.
There must be a difference of some kind between understanding the technical aspects of the words themselves (which I guess is needed in some respect in order to be able to say them) VS understanding what the words actually mean. I guess that might be why we can sometimes vaguely figure out what someone means based on energy, emphasis and body language...
Actually, speaking of languages, there's this 5-episode series I started watching a while back by Stephen Fry, and it was all about languages. It was really interesting, the first two episodes alone ranged from a more technical origin of, say, English, to different accents and dialects, and how they evolve(d) over time. I have to get around to finishing it myself, was pretty brilliant
Speaking of Japanese, have you seen Pacific Rim yet?

& those pie-menus look pretty nice too (& the music makes me giggle )

Yeah, the music on that Pie-menus' video
Well, I gotta say that makes the process of getting GIMP 2.8 easier I was wondering if I was going to have to build it from the source (software center only has 2.6 )
& maybe I should try Krita too, whaddaya say?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-04-29 00:06:42 +0000 UTC]
I actually have both Krita and MyPaint - though TBH I haven't used Krita very much. Not yet, anyway. Still trying to get used to using a tablet I'd say if you have the HDD space for it, might as well install it and have it handy
I've actually been keeping David's Journal post with those commands in my inbox ever since he posted it, back in October
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2013-04-29 00:21:48 +0000 UTC]
Well, I just installed them all but I've only tried MyPaint. Loving it as always
Next on my list was Krita, but it seems I've gotten hooked up on MyPaint once again
One tip with the tablet if I may: keep it in line (that is parallel) with the monitor at all times & make use of the natural arching of the wrist & arm to make curved lines (or segments thereof), rotating the image to get it on the right place (if the program doesn't let you rotate, second option is to rotate your whole arm around the tablet ).
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-04-29 00:40:55 +0000 UTC]
Ah, that might help - thanks for the tip! I have so many ideas for fan-art I'd like to draw, but every time I try I get frustrated at my lack of awesome skillz
So basically I should keep the tablet in front of my main screen and not off to the side like my mouse is, right?
Oh hey, wanna see a new topology test I just did? Cut another (different) curve into a cylinder again
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2013-04-29 01:17:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the main point is not to rotate the tablet itself under any circumstances. Makes the adaptation to not-looking-at-your-hand easier
PS: Oohhh... did someone say "topology"?
