You do incredibly detailed stuff. Thank you for sharing it! Particularly your tutorials; I find rendering guns and inorganic forms to be very difficult, but your breakdown makes it seem far more approachable.

Another way to approach it is working with a lot of layers. I used to do that.

I found the innermost part, for example the barrel or the trigger, and rendered that on

the lowest layer. Made a new layer and so on. That gives you more control over the whole process.

You can concentrate on one part at a time.

Well, even for my own purposes, I do try to keep patterns as simple as possible. Though my newer one would have an extra piece, I'm hoping it can keep it's visually (more) complex look at a larger scale, but we'll see. More species is my big goal, but one step at a time.

It was interesting to see how you came to the final composition and palette. I'm glad you posted the steps, so thank you for doing that!
That would please me so much you have no idea. Bonus if it's like, a crotchety old cat. The 'old' gave me a really clear image of a grizzled face and yellowed fangs.
I never could make a black tiger character I was happy with when I tried.

I have no idea if there is a better way, I am self taught so I just do what works for me. No problem! I personally find others' walk-throughs very insightful so I am glad you found mine interesting.
I have an idea that the stripes would need to be white or a very contrasting colour. I think I know what the perfect colours could be. Yeah, an old master cat! I shall kick the idea around for a bit till an opportunity arises.
Sometimes an idea really doesn't want to make it to 'paper'.

I was told the main purpose of being taught is so you can learn from other people's mistakes instead of making them yourself (then making your own later anyway). I should probably do more walk-throughs because it might help someone based on that logic, because I'm the same way: I LOVE finding them in someone's gallery, especially if I was going 'I like this... I like this...' beforehand. It's an awesome feeling.
Maybe a lighter neutral if the white is too... bright since it could probably get that way easily. I'll look forward to seeing what you end up with, if you do it.
The black tiger thing eventually recycled its way into a nightmare-demon design for a friend. Tiger stripes that glow in rainbow tones on a black body did, anyway.
