Y'know it's been years since they were introduced and I'm still not all that sure myself what the point of them is

Saw Pacific Rim. It was trope-heavy, has a number of clichΓ©s, and is by far the most formulaic story of Giant Monster/Giant Robot combat I've had the pleasure to see...
.....AND IT WAS GLORIOUS!!!
In other hands, it would have sucked (which meant I would have been livid) but with Del Toro at the wheel, it was by far the most impressive story I've ever seen, having the balls not to AVOID tropes, but to follow them with their own twists!
You HAVE to see this movie, man!

Okay, I know it's been a while, but I wanna ask...
What do you think of that new Pacific Rim film coming out friday?

Sir-Tristan In reply to ScrewDaRules11 [2013-07-10 22:15:51 +0000 UTC]
I don't really have any thoughts on it.

Oh yeah, that's the one that has giant humanoid robots despite how inefficient that form would be.
π: 0 β©: 1
ScrewDaRules11 In reply to Sir-Tristan [2013-07-12 04:03:23 +0000 UTC]
...What? What's wrong with the humanoid look?
And for that matter, wouldn't that apply to every mecha ever except Zoids?
π: 0 β©: 1
Sir-Tristan In reply to ScrewDaRules11 [2013-07-12 04:55:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, yes, while it's fine for stuff like that this movie's presenting itself in a sort of more gritty, 'realistic' style and giant humanoid mecha doesn't really fit.
Think about how they get around: they walk. Not the most stable of systems. Compare that to tank treads.

ScrewDaRules11 In reply to Sir-Tristan [2013-07-12 05:19:19 +0000 UTC]
Well, from what I've seen it's not exactly going for realism. This is a movie about giant monsters, and the humans who throw giant robots at them. What about that screams 'Realism?'

Sir-Tristan In reply to ScrewDaRules11 [2013-07-12 06:48:33 +0000 UTC]
Eh, I guess, but the point remains that humanoid is still a bad form for stuff like that.
