My newborn group is specialised on high detailed military illustrations (traditional or digital drawings and paintings) and it will host only the finest deviations while gathering some of the most talented artists.

What's a slat? Are you talking about the handguard?
Some parts are customizable, you aren't going to say that a M4 has a carrying while a M4A1 has flip up iron sights. (Took this example from the logic of my brother's classmates)

on the stock. for one of the m4 stocks, they have slats/indentations in it. on both sides.it is like 6 or 9 of em. [link]

It's an interchangeable, aftermarket part. The one Thomas drew was probably those older CAR-15 stocks: [link]
Before the introduction of the LE stock (The one you posted), those were used on the M4/M4A1s as standard: [link] But they are still in use today~
There's 5 slats on the LE stock btw, each of them denotes a stock position.
The LE stock has 6 positions while the older CAR-15 ones has 4.

All standard issue M4A1's come with the LE stock. The older one is what came with the early M4A1s. They also came on the M4's with the handgaurd was fixed. those were the origional M4s.

Yeah, the thicker handguards were made specifically for the A1 to prevent the barrel from overheating.
But heh, the main differences between both is that one has full-auto while the other one has 3 round burst, the rest can be fully customized, while keeping their original 14.5 inch barrel and flat-top receivers.
