I just finished watching the video about Islam and Women that you submitted in your journal in Nov. 2007. I too am horrified by the status of women under extremist Muslim regimes. However several of our allies are hardly better, and one gets the feeling that extremists are just waiting their chance to take over and remove the remaining relative safety of women in these countries.
I was struck by the use 3 times of photos from the 1.15 million-strong March for Womens' Lives in Washington April 2004. I remember that rally well, and it was not about women in foreign countries. It was about defending the women in THIS country from laws preventing their access to contraception and safe and legal abortion. There is a battle in the United states to control women and keep them "pregnant and in the kitchen" and we were there to say we won't go down without a fight.
I will be happy to post the link to your video in my journal, just please know that this person on the left, knows that feminism has no borders, and it is a right struggle. But it is NOT the reason the US is engaged in the battles in the Middle East. If it were, we should say so, like Lincoln finally buckled down and gave the Emancipation Proclamation, making it a war against slavery and not against secession. If it were, we would not spend so much money supporting allies who persecute women and refrain from applying pressure to them to do right. So that argument to support the war doesn't fly until we get right with the world public.
