# About me
I've colored comics for Image, Marvel, DC and many others. I got burnt out for the longest time and have been working in the advertising industry for the last 10 years. It seems I'm slowly getting pulled back into comics with freelance gigs here and there, and it's actually fun again!# Comments

Hello Nathan. I came across your youtube channel and wanted to say first thank you for all the knowledge you shared in those videos about comic book coloring tips, tricks, techniques, etc. they have definitely helped me as I'm learning about digital coloring for comics and the like. I see the last videos were posted about a year ago. Any plans to continue with more material on the channel?

I do have some stuff in the works. The issue I've been having is lack of time to find artwork and record.
Hopefully, that will change soon. When that does happen, I'll be sure to let everyone know!

Nathan, can you do a video or give an advice about how to be fast? Sometimes I spend about 15 hours just for one page (both flats and rendering). How can I improve my coloring speed? Thanks!

Hi Nathan,
I just watched your video on youtube about the comic book coloring tips and tricks Episode 2: Setting up your lineart. Slightly different from how I normally do coloring, but really helpful nonetheless. Thank you for sharing. I
f you don't mind me asking, assuming that you did the lineart manually and scanned the artwork using a scanner, could you share the setting (for the scans) that you normally used? For example, the scans resolution, color/grayscale/ or black and white, etc...
Thanks Nathan. Cheers!

The art work that was used, in that video, was provided to me already scanned in by the artist. It's kind of difficult to do a video on scanning art work, as most scanners have their own drivers and interfaces. I do have a video planned for general things to watch out for though, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Thanks for watching!

Hi Nathan,
I have posted this question in other posts but I am not sure I can find your reply. But I know i can find your answer here.
I love the way you have set up your color pallett. Have you explained how you went about that in another video?

It depends on what exactly you are talking about. Are you talking about picking the colors to put in my color palette, or using white blocks to separate colors? If it's the former, I do have a video on building a color palette. I don't have one for separating colors though. I'm going to add that to the list.

I watched a few of your videos on Youtube, they are really awesome. Thanks so much for sharing them. I colored a piece trying to use the marker coloring style. I put a link to the video and to your DeviantArt page in the description. I hope that is okay. Feel free to have a look, here is a link: batgirl Coloring Marker Style . I used to do rain like that as well. But I'm all about streamlining the process. If I can do something once and save that file to reuse it again and again, I'm going to do it!

Honestly, I have no idea where I got those brushes from. I know I found them through a Google search but I can't remember exactly what I had searched for. I'm sure it was along the lines of "natural media brush", "dry brush", or something to that effect. Sorry I could't be of more assistance.

As I have mentioned before, a lot of the brushed I've downloaded over the years have come from different sources. Some of those have a non-distribute clause, where you can't re-package them and give them away. And rightfully so. They should be downloaded from the people that took the time to make them. The thing is, I can't remember where I got all my brushes from, so I can't point people in the direction where to download them for themselves. Sorry.

A few weeks ago, I became a contributor to Comic Book Resources' "The Line It Is Drawn"...and quickly realized I needed to "up my game" to do the types of stuff I really wanted to do, because quite frankly, while my 'work' has been fairly well received, it's been kicking my BUTT to get them turned in on time.
Mostly because of being self-taught along with having not been able to indulge scratching this itch for over a YEAR.
So I took the week "off" to to do some "homework" and found your comic-book coloring series on YouTube. I will particularly be recommending it to anyone in the conventional airbrush community I belong to, that's looking for ways to improve their computer-graphics skills.
I'm VERY grateful for your series...(yes, I HAVE been using the "lasso exercises")...and want to reach a point to where I can get some work...I don't care if it's simply "flatting" for an experienced colorist once I'm closer to ready.
Being of extremely limited resources, finding your series on this subject was exactly what I'd hoped to discover.
Again, thank you for helping me to see what I need to work on to improve. Drop by my page here on DeviantArt, ( I have a SEPERATE "TLIID" folder there) or the-line-it-is-drawn.deviantar… to see where I am now with my skills...
...and thank you again for taking the time to provide this to us all.

Quick question about how you do line art. Do you use the pen tool or the brush? Thanks
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
lummage In reply to Thr3spawn [2014-03-17 17:25:30 +0000 UTC]
Usually, the line art is done by somebody else and I am adding the colors. If I am drawing something in Photoshop, I much prefer the brush though. It feels a bit more organic and hand drawn than the pen tool.
