Description
Was wracking my brain about what to render for Halloween day and had a few thoughts particularly Amaterasu Omikami of Japan being drawn out from the cave, the Nepalese festival of 'Gai Jatra', many have seasonal and similar relations to Halloween.
I started thinking back on what was memorable to me for this seasonal holiday and what I remember was hearing Loreena Mckennits' "Mummers Dance" on the radio when I was growing up. Though the actual dance happens in January, the pagan ritual has origins dating to ancient Egypt. In medieval times, the party wearing big masks would enter random houses play dice in silence and/or beg for food or drink after performing a skit or satirical poem, thus the similarity to Halloween. I depict one of the 'mummers wearing an Elk mask referenced from a 14th century manuscript illustrating mummers.
