That piece was pretty fun to paint. I mean sometimes you struggle to get the things work and sometimes it flows to you effortlessly. I'm eager for cinematic lighting, look and feel as well as for action packed scenery so I'm happy I was able to pull it out here.

No, it's not a 3d image so there is no displacement maps. Basically I use the same approach as artists at VFX houses - the image is a comp of layers (background, sky, fortress, dust, mud, fire, tyranids, marines etc.). Check out ILM channel on youtube for some ideas: www.youtube.com/user/ILMVisual…

i keep looking back and forth between the Tyranids and the space marines. my first impression is that the 'niddies look like the miniatures painted and photographed then blended into the scene and if so that is impressive on two fronts. first if true i assume these are your painted models and therefore your model painting is excellent. second your ability to blend a photo with a painting is fantastic.
if they are not real models then your ability to make them look as such is amazing
