I love the detail, especially in the kimono (is that what it is?) Did you use reference for the shading of the clothing? Or is that something you can do without looking at anything?

aiki-ame In reply to L-Y-N-S [2011-10-29 00:44:38 +0000 UTC]
shadings are pretty much the same whatever clothes it is on, so yes, as long as i get the general feeling of which direction the fabric folds i can shade without references. ^,^
PS. yup, it's called a kimono. ^w^

Lol, I thought it was a kimono. Thanks for the advice! I'm stuck in the transistion where my art doesn't look the way it should, simply because my shading sucks at the moment, so I've been looking at other artists for advice, hahaa, I'm sooo lame

it's completely fine to look for advice. lol i suggest you do look at reference first when you don't know which way the fabric folds. also look out for where the body moves/curves, this is usually where the fabric folds. you can also observe people in everyday life, sometimes i like to stare at people's clothing while on the bus (which makes me such a weirdo. haha....=w= )

Lol, I don't think it's weird to observe, I've done plenty of that when trying to get certain poses. May I also ask how you developed your shading techniques? Normally when I shade, I choose a darker color and blend, but a lot of your shading has a different color than the base, and looks more intersting and cleaner. Did you look at others work to help choose color or was a lot experimenting?
(Sorry I keep asking, but you're the only artist who's been giving me great advice!)

aiki-ame In reply to L-Y-N-S [2011-10-29 20:39:25 +0000 UTC]
first of all, i do my shadings on a different layer so i can always alter my shadings separate from my base color. (as you can see they don't blend and have a sharper edge. ^,^)
and yes, i always chose a different color rather than just a darker tone, it creates more interest. usually it depends on the lighting i choose. if i choose a warm lighting, then the shading would tend towards a warmer color. Say if my base colour is blue, and my lighting tends towards red, then the shading is purple, not just a darker blue.
all that theories aside, i cheat a lot by using the hue/saturation filters....=w=;
here's a tutorial on colours by one of my fav artists [link]
also, i have my own colouring video here: [link] (not sure if that's a good example since the clothes on this one's quite dark and you can't see very well)

I can't thank you enough for all your tips! I feel bad because I've been holding off on responding because I wasn't sure if I have any more questions. If I have another question, may I ask you in the future?
The tutorial was immensly helpful, I'm going to go thank Ein Lee for it!
