Basic Description:
The Kalistryii are a gracile, arthropod-like species with an upright bipedal posture and robust exoskeleton. They have two long legs and four short arms, with a large segmented chest and a thin torso. Their legs have a “false digitigrade” structure, meaning they two pairs of knees, one which bends forwards, and one which bends backwards, while their feet remain plantigrade. Each of their four arms lead to a simple set of hands, with each having a triangular palm, two large fingers, two small fingers, and a singular thumb. Despite some similarities with traditional arthropodiforms, their bodies are not divided into distinct sections, such as a thorax and abdomen. If anything, the only trait the Kalistryii share with traditional arthropods is the fact that their bodies are covered in thick, exoskeletal plates, giving them a somewhat insectoid appearance. The Kalistryii have large fan-shaped heads, housing three large eyes and a pair of olfactory bulbs behind the crest, along with a short, downward facing snout covering over a multi-jawed mouth. They breathe oxygen through a set of eight small openings along the back of the lower neck, four on each side. The Kalistryii are a particularly colorful species, with the majority of their bodies characterized by ashen blue or deep green hues, with secondary colors coming in the form of streaked patterns across the head, arms, and legs, which can be red, gray, white, blue, or any mix inbetween. Generally speaking, the most common color combination is an ashen blue exoskeleton with light gray or gray-green patterns. Their eyes are almost always jet-black in coloration, though on very rare occasions, they may be a dark silvery chrome. The Kalistryii are also a fairly sexually dimorphic species, meaning the differences between males and females are easily identifiable. For one, females are often substantially taller, usually by an extra 30cm or as much as 50cm, and their limbs tend to be noticeably longer in proportion to the rest of the body. The most obvious distinction, however, are their heads: the male’s head-crest is characterized by a pair of horns protruding from the sides (which are less prominent for females), while the female’s head-crest is more elaborate, being wider and sporting two pairs of elongated protrusions extending upwards from the top of the crest. Males also have a spike-like structure extending from the forearm, which is absent in females. As an additional note, females can also reproduce through parthenogenesis, leading to a roughly ⅔ population of females over males. Despite their arthropod-like appearance, they actually give birth to live young, typically one at a time, though twins are not terribly uncommon either. A notable quirk of multi-generational parthenogenesis is the gradual loss of pigmentation, resulting in individuals with paler and paler exoskeletons; in the most extreme examples, some individuals may have silvery-chrome eyes and completely white exoskeletons. Unlike most species, the Kalistryii are not particularly specialized when it comes to physical prowess or brawn, so to speak. Aside from their protective exoskeleton, the Kalitryii are relatively frail, and not especially strong, fast, agile, or resistant to physical harm. Their sense of smell and equilibrium is well developed, as well as a higher than average resistance to certain toxins, though everything else is fairly standard. They are biological generalists, having benefited from arising within a resource rich environment free of any major predators, parasites, or dramatic climate fluctuations. Perhaps as consequence of this evolutionary path, the Kalistryii tend to be characterized as a more mellow, psychologically straightforward species, lacking in some of the more ‘harsh’ ambitious traits associated with sapients that have adapted to a more hazardous environment; these are, however, generalizations, as true sapience dictates a wide degree of cognitive variability between individuals.
