Because in one of the comics, whenΒ Kurt (nightcrawler) was younger he crawled home at one time (not going to spoil the reason) and when his 'mother' found him, she then named him Nightcrawler.

Well, when Kurt was young, he snuck out to catch a movie. However when spotted, he was chased out. Forced to crawl back to safety, his mother reprimanded him for acting like a worm. So to discipline Kurt and satisfy his craving for excitement, Kurt wasΒ made to train for the circus. Taking on evening performances and having to come out of the shadows to take on the spotlight, he was eventually given the name, The Death defying 'Nightcrawler'.
