Call me crazy but even rundown and falling apart that place has a since of beauty to it that I love. Do you know why it ended up like this?

translation:

Hofstade, not far from Mechelen, was a very wanted recreationplace after the first world war.
The history of Hofstade-les-Bains or Hofstade-Baden is typical.
During construction the exact place changed many times and during the existence it has been destroyed partially, rebuild and re-arranged entirely.
Hofstade was a good sand-beach not very far from Brussel.

Around 1900 the state decided to build a second railtrack Antwerp - Brussels. For the construction of this many ground was necessary.
In 1902 they started with the construction. On the 140 hectares ground at south of the village Hofstade breaches of 10 up to 14 meters were dug, which took until 1916.
During the activities they found may bones of prehistoric animals.
During the war the work was ceased and the natural streaming of the groundwater in the surroundings ensured that the wells ran full.

One must say that the Belgian coast was well advertised in the newspapers after the first world war.
Mundane bathing resorts and the luxury made it a workmans dream.
Even closer at home they found a sandbeach, not far from the capitol.
Soon many people from around came to visit Hofstade to enjoy the sandbeach and the water.
With thousands!

By 1921 Hofstade became a managed area. This lasts up to 1925.
In this year decided the city Mechelen it will be used as a water extractionfor the cityse, and was recreation no longer possible.
This even led to considerable protests and chamber questions. In 1929 a 'Commission of the lake of Hofstade' was composed to concern and reflect the future of the lake.
All kinds of agencies interfere themselves, and it lasts a time before a decision is taken.

In the meantime social tourism increases, workers group themselves and make themselves strongly for holiday days.
The church subscribes to this to put its own social-christian position stronger.
Hofstade made a profit of this postwar flourish: it became a very atractieve touristic area.
Hofstadeis very wanted by the less situated which has no money for a stay in the Ardennen or the coast.

It is in 1932, that the brothers Steen and Victor Gelders took over the place.
They leased the area against 100,000 francs of the city.
A cycle-racing track was built, a village fair and market square in old-Belgian style.

This lasted up to 1937 then on insistence of the Ministry of Public Health the area was arranged up to ' realm field for preventive health care by open-air recreation'.
Former buildings got demolished and made place for more sport-specific make buildings.
A large air swimming pool was build, and the architect Maxime Wynants designed a beautiful building.

This building, modern and mainly in wood accelerated, lodging 2 shops, 2 bar/restaurants, sanitary supplies, storage and a red-cross office. Wooden cabins did service as dressing room for swimmers and sun-lovers.
Large windows at the beach-side and the walking-avenue let people think of an esplanade at the coast.
Hofstade-Plage did not become for nothing ' The poor people sea' , the coast was too expensive for many.
The designer of the building tried to get the illusion of 'a day to the sea'.

In 1978, the buildings became obsolete and get decayed.
Because of the historical and architectural value the buildings get protected as a monument in 2001.
A part of the buildings already is restored and received another destination.
The big round building and the dressingrooms still are waiting abandoned on their restoration.

So is it now public or private land? How does one get into it? And how much do you think it will cost to restore it? I could just imagine how beautiful it would be if fully restored to the way it once looked.

it's private with a public character
to get in...
you just climb over a fence

the cost to restore it....
that's not easy...
i think more than a new building

Well it looks like for at least cleaning up the place it could be done in a month with a team of hard working people. Once the cleaning is done you just need some people to come out and paint the place, install new doors and windows, bring in a "pool expert" to get the pool up and running again, get a plumber to check the plumbing again and that place could be up and running again in a matter of a few months. It seems like that's all it would take if the community would band together to get the job done of cleaning the place.
