Wander's short existence is stamped with loss and suffering with few rays of sunshine prior to his adoption into the sultana's family. Although his upbringing was normal in appearance from a outward perspective, things were much different behind cloaked curtains.

His mother joined Roth within the first year of his birth, a apathetic nanny filling her role as caretaker and his father, murdered, a crime he and his only two childhood friends discovered. In the midst of the whirlwind of chaos following his sudden orphanage Wander was whisked away to the palace by Doran Daher, the Sultana's aging husband, after he found interest in the case of his father's murder. In part due to the simple fact Sanjar, a trusted friend and advisor of Doran's, was the sentinel the children found the morning after they discovered Ender's body. The disinterest of his extended family in the child's future once Ender's estate was reduced to a mere pittance for the chick left none willing to claim the boy or even wish custody on him, even with his blue-blood. With no contest for Wander's custody, he was adopted into the Sultana's family.

As chaos grips the world again, Wander clings to the side of his new family and spends his days in the safety of the palace with Sanjar dutifully watching over the foal and the two slaves he was able to bring with him to his new life.
