Wonderful capture of you at work! I use a drafting table, and turn my work around so that I can paint it upside down as well, or turn so that I match the direction of the strokes etc....it helps to draw at those odds angles.

I have to credit my new camera as well, I could have never done that with my old point-and shoot.
When I started using the Polychromos I noticed that the little shavings of the pencil lead caused my fingertips to hurt. I think it happened especially with the black pencil. There's also the fact that my hands are quite sweaty. When I did pastel I used to have to wash my hands regularly, because things got pretty messy. With things other than pastel I can use the gloves and keep the grease and sweat of my hands away from the drawing.
You know what? I don't think I'm going back to pastels. The setup of Prismacolor Art Stix with solvent and pencils suits me well.

Nice picture! Interesting to see you are using gloves... and working vertically (or with a rather steep inclination of your drawing surface) with pencils...neither possibility ever occurred to me. ^^

Yeah, it's not so much about putting that much pressure as it is about layering. I use a solvent, Gamblin Gamsol, to spread the pencils more evenly, and do several layers of colouring.
