I wonder if some of these might still be alive, knowing that less than 5% of our seas have been explored by man...

True, more people have been to space than the deep sea, but if these reptilian whales are still alive, the ocean would look quite different in terms of sea life. Every sea creature would shit their pants every time they saw these guys. And the fishing industry would've never existed. Don't get me wrong, for I actually REALLY love mosasaurs.

But We don't know what the depths look like.....

Well, if you were to take all the water out of the ocean and peer at the seafloor, you'll see it is highly varied, with nearly the same landmarks as those found on land; canyons, mountains, volcanoes, deserts...There's even a UNDERWATER LAKE down at the Gulf of Mexico! Who knows what lies beyond that pool of brine. Perhaps it is a portal to the realm of demons? A sanctuary of prehistoric predators that Evolution secretly kept safe? I don't know. We do discover new species every year or so.....Like the Pig-Butt Worm(which is quite possibly the most funniest animal in existence) and a squid that deliberately broke the Law of Physics by bending its arms 90 degrees.

So what are you trying to say?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kenny123663 In reply to Nala1994 [2015-10-17 14:09:50 +0000 UTC]

What I'm trying to say is that the ocean is simultaneously both alien and familiar to us; as a species, we once lived in the ocean hundreds of millions of years ago during our course of evolution. But as terrestrial beings, we have long lost 90% of our link to the ocean. The ocean looks so bizarre to us as its inhabitants display behavior that many of us can only dream about. If Evolution had retained us as fish then the whole watery world would make more sense. But we have long evolved from four-legged tetrapods clambering out of the sea.

So it is possible then?

Kenny123663 In reply to Nala1994 [2015-10-18 11:47:50 +0000 UTC]

There is only progress, never conformity nor regression. With technology evolving at a constant rate, then we will eventually learn a whole lot about the ocean....As long we strive to conserve the livelihood of its aquatic inhabitants, that is.

Easy to forget that sea-sauruses were part of prehistoric life too. Thanks for sharing this. Scuba diving must have been terrifying ... What era were these creatures living in, do you know?

Many of us are still trying separate paleo myths from reality. Thank goodness for some scientists that are making it accessible so anyone can learn here: dinologue.com/category/paleo-m… .

well, they were not all from the same type, you could probably assume that at any one time, it was relatively comparable to today.

this is great,
just one question, is the size comparison correct - could you add a metre bar?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eiveri In reply to m0zch0ps [2012-08-27 00:11:03 +0000 UTC]

i'm no paleontologist or anything, nor am i the artist obviously lol but as a passing viewer/someone that studied these a lot when i was younger they seem about right. size estimates vary for a lot of species (plenty of incomplete skeletons and everything) but most of these go along with them. the kronosaurus looks a bit too big in comparison to the shonosaurus, however, but that's data that could have shifted too.

As a childhood reader of lots of books filled with these artist's renditions, I gotta say these look professional. Is there any reason why there are no long-necked marine reptiles like thalassomedon or plesiosar? Then again, the probably would have been hard to squeeze in considering how full this piece is already.
