Description Another shot of those dirty kids. This time they are standing by a wall laughing. They don’t seem to mind how dusty and smelly things are around there, still happy, playing like little kids do.

This is a rather strange photo, it came out very old looking, and when I scanned it, a lot of the details got blown out (I really hate this scanner) and I did a little fixing of details in photo shop, but mostly this is what the print looks like, just a little less contrasty.

This isn’t the greatest looking photo I submitted here, but it has some things to say.

"This isn’t the greatest looking photo I submitted here, but it has some things to say"...
In my own opinion it is the best piece of yours. Some months ago I rated this as my favourite, and I still can't fond a better piece of photography than this with two chinese children. The old look actually is a pro, not a con.
If this was a print, it'd be in my Wishlist..
avotius, this is what I call photography.

One of the things I love the most about black and white photography is that, without color, you're forced to rely on much more subtle devices to convey emotion. Things like texture and tone. Both of which you've BEAUTIFULLY used here. I LOVE the tones from where the wall meets the street and upwards. With that rough texture from the wall, it looks wonderfully tactile. I would've been happy with just the wall and the street, given those tones and the texture, but the two children really make this a good photo.

The sharp contrast on their faces does a beautiful job of defining them; there aren't a lot of lines, just harsh shading and shapes, which I think you've done a good job of emphasizing. The slightly soft focus really helps with this; this is one case where sharp focus would've taken away rather than helped. I think you've done a wonderful job.

The old look and high contrast really add to this, I think. Nice shot.

i actually love the high contrast, slightly blurred effect in this photo. kids in the street are the funniest things to photograph.

honestly, this picture looks really good, despite the out-of-focus-ness. if anything it adds to the picture. it gives it a really classic feel to it. the picture gives a lot of different emotions as well, all depending on the perspective you have while looking at it.

I really like how the picture is slightly distorted, with the asymmetry not only in the horizontal line, but also in the position of the two boys, making this picture really interesting to look at...so, I liked it a lot!

sharpness and clarity are not the most importand things by far for pics in web because of all the compressions and stuff. what i love is to see the story and all those meanings behind a picture.... you showed me that!!!

heh, yup yup, the sad thing is im sitting here right now looking at reviews for a new auto focus camera. For some strange reason im having a hell of a time keeping my photos in focus anymore. With te same canon 50mm 1.8 lens *flips through photos* today I shot a roll of film (36) and got 9 photos in focus....9!!!!!!!! Thats disgusting.

It seems sort of weird, me fully manual camera was my frist, and at first I got great results with it, but now im lucky if I can get half of my photos in focus anymore.

My roomate (who is also a photography student) suggested I set the thing up on a tripod and to some simple test shots, we both shot off 3-4 different shots and of mine there was 1 in focus and his all looked good. Sigh, its like ive reverted on myself or something!

I really like the old look about it, the high contrast and film grain is what made it look old i think. I like it though. Good capture colin!

thats what its all about, street photography, seeing and reacting to the moment without a second thought, well....maybe one second though like "is my lens cap still on?"

hehe, yeah... i know what you mean but those pics are the best... you really capture something spontaneous and unconstrained...
