Description

Coatlicue, in Mexica mythology, is a mother deity associated with fertility, earth, and death. Her name means "she of the skirt of snakes." Portrayed with a skirt of snakes and sharp claws on hands and feet, Coatlicue embodies the duality of life and death.

The most renowned sculpture of Coatlicue is the "Snake Skirt," discovered at the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlán. This impressive representation depicts Coatlicue's head and breasts, with snakes forming her skirt and hands transformed into claws. The iconography reveals her connection to fertility and death, symbolizing regeneration through the natural cycle.

Coatlicue played a crucial role in Mexica mythology as the mother of significant deities, including Huitzilopochtli, the god of the sun and war. Her association with death and regeneration made her a revered figure in funeral and fertility rituals, reflecting the complexity of pre-Hispanic religious beliefs and the importance of duality in their worldview.

This piece depicts the duality, strength and delicacy of our mother. It's one of my fav's already.
