Description
The Anhui musk deer (Moschus anhuiensis) is one of seven musk deer species - which, despite the name, aren't true deer. Instead of antlers the male musk deer have a pair of long fangs, and (most of) the species also have distinctive dark and white stripes on their neck and chest. Male musk deer also produce musk, a substance which has been used for making high quality perfumes.
The Anhui musk deer is on the greyer side compared to the other species, some 70-77 cm long and 50 cm tall, and has unique dark "socks" (which can't be seen here). They only live in high-altitude forests in parts of the Anhui province of China, and are the most obscure of all the musk deer species, with very little research or even general information available about them.
Like other musk deer they are hunted for meat and their musk. IUCN has classified them as Endangered in 2015, while China considers them Critically Endangered - which probably is more correct, given there likely are less than a thousand animals left.
(The SeldomSeenSpeciesSunday is a challenge first made by TheCynicalHound , which I'll try to do this year .)
The piece isn't done yet And the fullbody (which will be posted in two weeks) will look better:
Another ungulate, but when one of the world's most renowned deer experts (who you emailed to ask for information about the species, because there are no verified photos of it) says he's interested in seeing your drawing? Well, that kind of speeds up the process.
Also, snow is a joy to draw. And trying to turn a badly mounted Siberian musk deer photo into a live Anhui musk deer is a time-consuming challenge, but honestly? I'm kind of proud of the results
Edit: And done!
