Mimi Tanaka was born in Opelucid City. She was the youngest of four siblings; her twin brothers Kenji and Koji, and her oldest brother Jun. Thankfully, Mimi never had to worry about being bullied by her brothers, as even from a young age , the four of them were very close. A big reason for that was the rocky experience they had to endure during their childhood. Mimi’s mother and father had moved to an apartment in Opelucid from the Johto region shortly after they got married. Her father had scored a decent paying office job in downtown Opelucid. Her mother however, was a bit of an irresponsible parent. She had always been a party animal, living for the night life. She was constantly getting fired from jobs by being flaky or showing up drunk. It caused a lot of tension between her and Mimi’s father; arguments between them were constant. Then, when Mimi was four years old, her father found out that his wife had been having an affair for several years. It caused even more tension, as well as more intense arguments in the apartment. Mimi was too young to understand what was going on, but those intense fights scared her a lot. Thankfully, through all of this, her older siblings were looking out for her. They’d play with her in her room to distract her from the fighting…and it helped distract them too. Mimi gained a lot of appreciation and admiration for her brothers because of this, and she looked up to them a lot! Eventually, their parents went through a very messy divorce, with her father taking custody of the kids, and her mother leaving and moving back to Johto. It was a rough time, but Mimi still had her father, as well as three older bothers looking out for her, so she was able to move on from this experience.

Things went fairly smoothly for several years. Mimi idolized her brothers, and was practically attached to their hips 24/7, hanging out with them wherever they went. At school, she would hang out with them at recess, and happily took part in all the shenanigans they got into with their friends. Mimi’s brothers and their friends were troublemakers, known for pulling off pranks, teasing people, and generally being nuisances. Naturally, Mimi followed suite. She thought they were so COOL, even if their shenanigans landed them all in detention from time to time. Their father was never able to properly scold them; he was simply too busy working to keep food on the table as a single parent. As long as they weren’t getting into too much trouble, their mischief would fly under his radar.

Then, when Mimi was thirteen years old, the meteor showers began, followed by the calamities. Her family emerged from the phenomenon mostly unscathed, save for some minor damages to their building and street from earthquakes. But the whole event put even more stress on their father, who was already overwhelmed from work. Her older brothers decided to straighten out (just a bit) and got jobs working at a convenience store, so they could help add some money on the table and ease the burden on their dad’s shoulders. (They still found time to be troublemakers with Mimi after work hours, of course.)

During all this, the phenomenon that were the Mask Holders began, rapidly gaining attention in news and media. Mimi became absolutely fascinated with Mask Holders; they were so mysterious, so COOL, especially the Black Masques. As Mask Holders quickly grew in popularity-and infamy- Mimi became completely enamoured with the fantasy of becoming a Mask Holder herself one day, causing a ruckus with all of her favourite Black Masques. It was just a silly fantasy, but a girl could dream, right?

Instead, Mimi chose to start focusing on a different, more attainable dream. Inspired by one Mask Holder who was the lead singer of a band, Mimi was determined to create a band of her own! She purchased a guitar and began teaching herself the ways of music. She was even able to convince her brothers to join in as well! The group would practice every day after class throughout high school, in hopes of getting good enough to land a gig somewhere, someday soon!

Unfortunately, even after a couple years of practice, they weren’t able to score a gig anywhere or make much of an impression at all. It’s not that their music was bad, it just wasn’t anything noteworthy either. This was disheartening for Mimi, but she was still determined to make it big, just like that Mask Holder that inspired her. Unfortunately, her brothers didn’t feel the same. Mimi would follow their advice...but this WAS Mimi’s passion, her main goal in life, she was sure of it! It upset her to see her brothers, who she looked up to so much, give up on this. She didn’t blame them though, she wouldn’t want to hold them back from pursuing whatever goals they wanted for themselves. But it still hurt to watch them move out to college/university one by one, leaving her alone at home with her father.

Mimi was intrigued, and felt almost compelled to reach into the water and pull out whatever that purple thing was. As she picked it up and washed the mud off it, she realized it was a Mask. A Mask that sported the wily grin of a Gengar. No..no way, there’s no way this could be what I think it is, right?! Mimi thought to herself. Excitedly trying on the Mask, Mimi felt a surge of power as she transformed…

Oh, oh this was the REAL DEAL, Mimi realized as she checked out her new form in the reflection of the creek. Well then, looks like her old dream of becoming a Mask Holder wasn’t so crazy after all. Perhaps it was time to find and meet all those Black Masques that she had idolized so much…and maybe ask to join their gang while she’s at it…
