Description
To one of the winners of PandiiVan 's contest that ended months back, requested that I draw this dragon of his. It gave me an excuse to experiment some more with backgrounds and textures. Took longer than I thought it would, but I learned quite a bit during this piece. A lot of fun.

What a marvelous picture we have here. Let us observe the overall image it creates. By my first look at it I thought: "The earth was shattered beneath the wrath of the gods." Then I discovered the dragon brought into the picture in the front and he smiled, what a nice contrast in this picture even when the dragon seems just to be the witness, then the middle of the attention in particular. So let's begin in the rear and move towards the front.
The eye-catcher here is definitely the volcano, erupting into the sky. The lighting in this part of the picture is well done and focuses the attention more towards the "bleeding" mountain. Also the blurred clouds circled around the open "wound of the earth" let the observer wander towards its center. So far for the background now let's move to the front of the picture. It is interesting, that there are only two lava springs that connect the background with the foreground. This border divides the picture quite nice and gently into two parts, even two pictures.
So let's observe what is in the front and there we find further lava rivers and a dragon. His attention though is not caught by the burning wound in the background, he just watches how the lava is flowing gently around his wing, that he plunged into it. An interesting scene I may add and what a contrast in case of the apocalyptic background. Another feature of the scene is the very well done lighting that illuminates the dragons scale armor.
On the other hand the blurring is causing a light loss of sharpness in terms of texture following the river. It is also difficult for the observer to identify the center of the attention or the biggest point of interest in the overall picture.
Nevertheless the picture at hand is very well done. There may be some minor flaws but the overall composition speaks for itself. So I can only say keep up the good work and I hope there will be more art like this in the future done by you.

Hey there! Thank you so very much for this critique, I appreciate every single word and second of time you took to type this for me. You provided a different perspective other than my own on the picture, and I think that's something that every artist hopes to hear and use. The center of attention comment toward the end was extremely helpful, and definitely helps remind me to do that in my paintings, so that it's easier on the eyes.
