Now THIS is the game I think needs a remake, I think FAR more than 2. It's plot has been done over and over again by it's sequels (sequels in our chronology) that it's actual plot seems laughably lackluster in comparison. Ganon revives, kidnaps Zelda in order to get the Triforce, Link embarks on a journey as a hero to collect the pieces of the Triforce from dungeons and then confronts Ganon and frees Zelda. Seems boring compared to other versions of the games that came later.
I think this game needs a portable calibre remake, sort of like how Metroid got Zero mission. Add some more plot points, actually have Link interact with NPCs more, update the graphics, and add a few more game play elements, but otherwise keep the game play the same. Look at Ducktales Remastered for a good example on how you can update a classic. Same basic game play elements, but a vastly improved plot and graphics.
Oh, and I should say cool icon, looks very nice.

Technically it did get a remake of sorts with the 16-bit upgrade released weekly on Japan's BS-X Satellaview. Even if Nintendo would do nothing more than combine those weekly releases into one cohesive game for the virtual console, they'd still rake in a lot of dough.

Well, as long as the remake had an actual plot that was based on, but expanded upon, the original plot of the NES Legend of Zelda, then I guess that works. If it's more of a sequel than a remake, then it still needs a remake. I honestly think something with graphics on par with Link Between Worlds would make for an interesting game.
Don't get me wrong, a decent remake of Zelda II: the Adventures 2 in the same line would be well worth it and wanted as well, but they should make sure they polish off the combat system to be more accessible to gamers more familiar with traditional Legend of Zelda game play. I think there is indeed a reason they didn't go any farther with that style of combat, and Link to the Past and Link's Awakening onward went with the same formula as the original and they haven't really deviated too much since.
