Description Jawzahr is a dragon known in very old Persian culture as a sly, curious beast. One legend states that he overheard two deities discussing the properties of an anonymous drink said to make the consumer immortal. He found said potion, drank it an became immortal, all the while the sun and the moon watched. The two celestial beings told a powerful god of his antics, and said god sliced Jawzahr's head off. In his halved state, he perpetually chases the sun and moon, gobbling them down and causing eclipses whenever he does so.

"Soma" is a word deeply associated with immortality in Vedic tradition. It refers to a plant, a drink made from the plant (which gives immortality), and a god. The god Soma, coupled with the god Chandra of the moon, is the divine maker of the potion-soma. The other Hindu deities drink soma to retain their immortality, and the constant consuming and replenishing of soma represents the waning and waxing of the moon.

When I first read about Jawzahr way back when, I was all like - CONNECTION! *spazz* I can easily meld the two ancient beliefs together. The god that beheads Jawzahr could be Agni or Indra, since they are both divine individuals that consume soma in vast amounts. Jawzahr would then chase Surya (sun) and Chandra (moon), as they both ride in chariots and would provide difficult chases.

I don't care that wings won't work in space... GODDAMMIT, THIS IS FLIPPIN' CULTURAL DIFFUSION!!

On another note, I came up with the design, and I actually am pretty fond of it. I will undoubtedly use it again. And thus, to waste space, here it is: Design (c) BTS Oh, ples dunt steal meh design!!!11!1

My first choice to comment about soma as magic, was frustrated because the joker had blocked me -some reason I can't recall. So,after a search through nonsense about some guy named Soma, I finally found this.

In my fan-fics, the soma formula is a spell that secures the lifeforce to the chanter. (s)he can not die. BUT said eternal life allows injury, even horrific injury, and the person just lives on in some horrible way. The relief that death brings is denied such magician.

For that reason, the spell is banned. Other ways of staving off death have been found, but even so, the person eventually tires of life and - moves on. Just as ghosts eventually tire of afterlife and - cross over.

Of the witches & wizards who ended a crisis some 12,000 years ago, are any still around today ? (and echo says ---today ?...)

Very interesting! In fact, that sounds very similar to the premise of a book I had published last year titled The Soma Effect. One of the protagonists is afflicted with a "curse," so to speak, that grants him invisibility and immortality. He also lives in that horrible way you mentioned, as he had tried to take his own life Β with a chainsaw, but the curse prevented his death and his body tried to heal itself in the best way it could.

if you wanted to see, though there's not much of a summary on Amazon:Β www.amazon.com/Soma-Effect-B-C…
