Description Not really a season posting, just a coincidence I was working on this one.

Not much of a backstory. Maybe slimer pranking her, or maybe a "bondage ghost" made its appearance and left her as you see. I recall that in the electric ghost episode (kilowatt?? or what was his name?) he used electrical wire to trap the ghostbusters, so maybe its him again, trapping janine.

I dont usually make variations of my pics, I just couldn´t decide if yellow or blue was better. I like how she looked in the yellow outfit, but canonically as in the cartoon intro, she wears blue.  I originally made her yellow version, and then i Thought "ok, just a simple pallete swap, right?"....WRONG!!, Maybe it is not that notorious, but I had to adjust hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, shadowing an lineart coloring.

What the F happened to this version of janine!! They just went downhill with the round glasses, the long skirt, the dull librarian look and the awful hairdos!! They even change her smarty attitude into a silly naive nerdy girl as the series went on.

Again lazy to draw ecto 1 and all the details, photo cropping and filtering. Not really a fan of making backgrounds. Anyway, who is looking at the background?.

CabrOOOOOOOoooon out!

1. Yes, the ghost was named Killowat

2. Go watch Phelous' video on the bad seasons of The Real Ghostbusters, trust me, it's worth watching if you want to see why this show completely went down the shitter.

3. This pic is going to serve as a major inspiration for an upcoming fan-fic of mine, so thanks!

I watched phelous (thorougly analysed) videos and I have a piece of advice: go to the video settings on youtube and set it to 1.5 speed.

Best Janine pic ever.

I bet they toned her down due to parental complaints.

Kind Sir, you just made my day with that comment.  Thanks!!

I researched a bit about her looks and evolution and you are certainly right. Parents complaining about the mini skirt, the pointy glasses and the skanky appearance made the producers change her looks as the seasons progressed into a more naive and less sexualized female character.

Nevertheless, the first impression is the one that lasts forever, and for me she is the one an only Janine melnitz. Just as the yellow jumpsuit april O´Neil from TMNT, hopefully Megan Fox can make her justice on the movie... naah.

Why does rebooting shows or redesigning characters so far hasn´t topped the originals?

Putting childhood crushes and love for the shows aside, some reboots are just awfullly redesigned.

For me, a crushing disappointing redesign was Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

This is how she first appeared, back in the day.

And this is how she appears in her most recent animated series.

Ugh.

To be fair, they did de-age to only twelve in that DiC animated series and that isn't the most recent series.

I think the new and recent animated series looks worse pmctvline2.files.wordpress.com…

Oh god!! the horrror!! From sexy freckles and sweater puppies to ...that!!

And they blame disney for the unhealthy skinny look promoted among teenagers.

Mmmhh, I always thought archie comics was kind of like the Filmation cartoons (he man, brave starr, ghostbusters -the shitty ones- , she-ra). All the female characters shared the same body type, but man!!! they are still hot to this day... Talk about great designs that pass the test of time.

Cabroon´s mind is working overtime....

we-r-nomad In reply to cabroon [2013-11-04 04:40:02 +0000 UTC]

That's because they were the same design.

I think it was the commentary of my Flash Gordon animated DVD, where I learned that She-Ra, and Teela were redresses of Princess Aura, from the earlier cartoon.

But you're right, that is one damn sexy design.

And once again, the update is far from an imporvement.

While I'm on the subject of Filmation cartoons, I was just thinking their 1974 Star Trek animated series. It carried over the writing, and voice acting from the live action show, and hence won well deserved Emmys for family programming, but the animation boiled down to single frame cells of the Enterprise being dragged arcoss the screen.

And TAS was the most expensive cartoon on American television at the time!

Meanwhile, Japanese kids around the same time were watching this !

Is it any wonder why anime would hit so big?

Man! you really know your animation, right? are you some kind of comic/animation historian, which is awesome!

I wanted to become an animator (for disney, childhood dream) so I am self taught in terms of animation, comics, design, art, color and so on. I enjoy researching and studying pics, Cal Arts articles and demo reels, classic and modern animation. I admire your mastery in forced perspective by the way.

Each time I research and draw fanart of a character, I feel like I understand and absorb a little bit of knowledge from the original designers, and understand why some designs pass the test of time.

And as you say, japan is light years ahead of us in terms of storytelling. I still remember with a tingle in my spine that the first anime that I watched was ... Saint seiya!! In my country they were called Zodiac Knights. "Caballeros del Zodiaco". After that, I fell in love with japanese animation. SO FUCKING DIFFERENT from everything I had seen until then.

Oh, one more bit of cartoon history trivia. Going back to the Star Trek animated series, which, incidentally is where we learned that the "T" in James T Kirk stands for "Tiberius". Did you know that in Filmation's initial pitch to Paramount, they had created plucky teen sidekicks for the Enerprise crew?

Thank God Rodenberry vetoed that crap. (Yea guys, I'm thinking all the rayguns and aliens and stuff, as well as the fact that the whole thing takes place in OUTER FRIGGIN' SPACE, will be enough to bring in the kiddies. Don't you?)

Incidentally, it's also where I got my fetish for Lieutenant Uhura being kidnapped by space robots.

Hmmm, now that I think of it. There was a lot of bondage in Filmation cartoons.

I always wondered about that...towards the end of the show's run they took that particular boondoggle head-on with an ep that revealed some kind of spirit (natch) was responsible for all the changes to her appearance.

Not surprisingly, that one was scripted by J. Michael Strazynski...that should tell you all you need to know right there..

I remember that episode fondly, it always irritated me that they paired Janine with the Rick Moranis character in the second movie.
