Description
The tension within the herd melted away with the melting of the snow. Well, the tension for all but one horse.
Over the course of the last month, Leandra had watched Gutter run himself ragged, fussing over their little herd and all the round bellies growing within it. Leandra’s own was already starting to kick, seemingly inheriting her attitude with the sharp thumps and bumps she could feel inside her. Every time Gutter noticed her wince, or as much as sigh or wrinkle her nose in discomfort, he came floating to her side, putting his nose all over her to make sure she was okay. It was endearing, at first, but at some point, he’d have to realize that she wasn’t going to simply keel over and die because she had a foal in her. This wasn’t her first rodeo, but the stubborn, worrisome stallion refused to listen.
To Leandra’s relief, and to Gutter’s immense exhaustion, she wasn’t the only mare carrying a foal, and she occasionally got a moment without the fussy stallion when another in their herd drew his attention. Chamomile and Denali weren’t as far along as her but they too were growing round, not helped in their shape by the fresh spring grass sprouting around them. The winter hadn’t been the easiest, not with the chill lingering so much longer than it usually did, but the thaw had come suddenly and quickly, chasing the snow and chill from the valley. The two mares had confided in Leandra, as well as Honey, that the foals they carried were their first, and the four of them had agreed to keep that nugget of information from Gutter.
They did love their stallion, but his head was dense as river rocks, and he would tie himself into knots of worry if he knew both Denali and Chamomile weren’t as experienced as Leandra or Honey. A small white lie never hurt, did it?
