Description

It was night inside the healing house of Filniss and all was quiet save the hushed voices of nurses and the soft bubbling of healing tanks. In the circle green room on the second floor two figures slept.  Holographic medical monitors encircled a bed in the center of the room, their screens rimming everything in a soft blue light.  Outside the picture window colorful auroras danced through the black sky, playing with the flickering stars.

The peaceful atmosphere was broken by a soft moan and the rustling of blankets.

Soorn’s eyes blinked open from where he slept in the guest hammock in the corner.  He was a light sleeper.  He had to be.  As a farmer he had to be ready to chase away the herds of droofins that would stomp through his fields at night.

He sat up in his hammock, his eyes trained on the oval bed and the small figure that occupied it.  The alien child...Rover.  The boy had only remembered his name yesterday...was tossing in his sleep.

Soorn slipped onto the stone floor and moved silently over to the bed.  His yellow eyes scanned the monitors.  He was not an educated man by any means but he could see by the pulsing circle on one of them that the boy’s heart rate had increased.

He frowned, deeply concerned.  The young alien had sustained massive trauma when his little shuttle had crashed into one of Soorn’s fields.  The boy now sported purple bruises over most of his left side, a metallic plate in the side of his head and a mechanical arm.  It had been several days and the physicians were optimistic about his recovery.  But something was happening here and it was worrysome.

Soorn was not an expert on alien emotion but the expression on the boy’s face struck him as pained as he moved his head slowly from side to side.  His right hand clutched the covers so tightly his knuckles were white and tiny droplets of water were appearing on his forehead.  His lips began to move as if he were talking to someone.  Suddenly his chest began to rise and fall quickly and deeply as if he were gasping for breath.  “Dad...Dad!”  The words were mumbled and slurred but his translator recognized them.

He needed call someone!  For all he knew the boy could be dying right before his eyes!

Before he could even turn away a horrible shrieking sound tore from the boy’s throat and he sprang upright in the bed.  His eyes were wide and wild, both hands reaching forward as if trying to snatch something out of the night air.

A doctor and a nurse appeared instantly in the doorway and rushed inside.

Rover’s chest still heaved and his wide green eyes stared, unblinking at the far wall.  His body shook.

Both the doctor and the nurse scanned the screens, their tails flicking behind them in concentration, and all eight arms tapping at information, looking for the reason for this sudden outburst.

“What’s wrong?”  Soorn asked, getting to the question before either of the physicians.  “Are you hurt?”

Despite the massive bruising on his left side the boy hugged himself tight and rocked a little, still staring straight ahead.  At first he appeared not to have heard.

The doctor and nurse looked at each other worriedly.

But after a moment he shook his head from side to side, a gesture they had come to recognize as denial.  "If you are not injured then please describe your symptoms."

The boy's face pinched in anguish and his eyes glistened. "I...I had a dream."

The doctor relaxed, her tail drooping to the floor and swapping a glance full of relief and just a little annoyance with the nurse.  “It’s simply a fear response.”

“Calm down, Islet.”  The nurse said, patting his head.  “It is just a night story.  Go back to sleep.  All will be well in the morning.”

And without another word they left.  Soorn watched them disappear into the hallway before looking back down at Rover.  His chin trembled in the blue light that glinted off of the metal in his head, his mechanical arm and the liquid that was pooling in his eyes.  One didn’t have to be an expert on xenosociology to understand that the boy was in deep distress.  And the physicians token comfort had done nothing.

“What was it about?”  There was silence.  “I won’t scoff.  I promise.”

He still didn’t turn to look at Soorn as he spoke, his voice high and broken.  “I don’t...I don’t remember!”  His head dropped down and he clenched both fists in on his forehead, clutching at his curly hair.

Soorn reached a hand out and placed it on the boy’s trembling shoulders and leaned a little closer.  “I’m sorry.”

That was all the encouragement Rover needed.  He threw both arms around the Jssfloon’s waist and buried his face in his shirt.

Soorn was startled but didn’t pull back.  After a brief pause he climbed up onto the bed and pulled the boy close with all four arms.  He could feel where his shirt touched the boys face become warm and wet.  He began to let out a series of small coughing sounds interspersed by an open-mouthed whine.  There were no soul spots and no chuffing but he knew the child was crying.

“Everything’s gone!”  He mumbled through choking sobs.  “I...I had something.  Something important.  And then...and then…”  He shook his head and cried some more.  “Its all gone.”

He rested his chin on the boy’s head.  “You do have something, Little Traveler.”  He spoke softly  and the boy’s sobs lessened a little as he listened.  “You have the future.  We all lose things, little one.  But look forward to the things you can gain.  The things you can do.  The things you will see.  You will always have the future, whether it is only tomorrow or the rest of your life.”  The boy’s crying had died down to uneven breaths and the occasional hiccup.

“And you have me.  I’m here.”

In moments he felt the boy’s shoulders relax a little and the shaking stopped.  The slightly painful death grip the boy had around his waist was lessening.

Rover let out a shaky sigh.  Soorn could feel his heartrate slow and his breathing even out.

Neither of them spoke.  They just sat there, with the young alien leaning his head against the farmers chest, the aurora flickering in the night sky behind them.  Until finally the boy was fast asleep.

Wow! Thank you so much for such kind encouraging words!

I like to keep Ho Ho Hyperdrive fun and upbeat but every once and awhile I like to delve into Rovers back story. And the first couple weeks were pretty scary for him, trying to figure out who he was and coming to grips with the idea that he didnt know so very much about himself. But the worst of it was this nightmare, that grows less frequent with age but never completely goes away.

He was fortunate to have someone as willing to understand as Soorn take him in. Rover confuses the daylights out of him sometimes. But he does his best to raise him right.

I really love fun and upbeat, but I also really like that the universe you've created has a more serious and poignant side to it as well. It gives the story and characters more depth and a wider range of aspects to appreciate. Yeah, Soorn is super nice and little Rover very sweet. They're both very likeable personalities.

Aw! Poor little Rover. Glad Soorn's there to comfort him. Totally random thought, but I love Jssfloon writing. The lighting here is awesome, by the way.

Yeah. He's going through pretty much the worst time in his life right now. Its good that he had someone to help him through it.

I had loads of fun with the lighting. I wanted it to kind of look sterile and dark.

Soorn is such a good adoptive dad.

It does! Except with the lights in the sky back there, it really highlights Rover and Soorn there in the middle, making it look like there's a flicker of colorful hope in the middle of the dark hospital.

Oh, how full of emotion!  My eyes are actually wet right now. I know I've said this before, but I would really love to see this story made into a full blown tv or movie series one day. It's just so beautiful and filled with heart. Well done~

Beautiful and sad. I'm so glad Soorn is there. You'd think the doctors would be a little more understanding--aren't there any paediatricians? I love how, even without soul spots, Soorn can sense Rover's distress. His words are also a comfort too. We all lose, but we gain as well. The future, whatever it is, is ours for the taking.

I also really, really love the blanket. I want a blanket like that. And the hieroglyphs. And their poses. And the lighting. So much detail... how long did this all take?

chill13 In reply to zealousshadow [2016-11-07 23:04:07 +0000 UTC]

It would have been so much harder for Rover if he wasn't.
Jssfloon children while far from emotionless are logical and not prone to such bursts of emotion. So the doctors simply thought he was overreacting. They just doesn't understand how bad off he was.

I used a texture here on DA.

The pose was the hardest part. It took me several days to get it right. And then the sketch sat on my computer for a couple of months before I decided to color it.

Great job. :}

"You have me..." oh my goodness. This just made me cry... dear Soorn. He is a treasure.

I loved the description of the healing house (cool term for them to have instead of "hospital"), and Soorn referring to Rover as "alien"--we're not always used to thinking how aliens themselves would find we humans the "aliens!"

(Is "Islet" the Jssfloon word for "child" or "outworlder" or something else? Just wondered.)

Thanks! I wanted of to sound a not different but still be instantly recognized.

Islet is a small island. It is an endearing term that means little one.

You're very welcome!

And ah, I see! I'd heard that term before but wasn't sure if the Jssfloon were using the actual English word or not. Now that you mention it, that makes sense, since if I'm remembering correctly, their planet is made up of islands instead of continents. That's such a cute and creative metaphor for them to imagine for their little ones.

Yep.  It translates.  Many of their colloquialisms have to do with water and the ocean because they have such a close relationship with it.

Aw wow. I... Wow, this was beautiful. Sad. But great. Just how Soorn showed concern for Rover. That's the best part. Soorn is the only one that really cared. At that time anyway, before Flyspur.
And that dream! So this is the first time he had it, huh? Wow, I can't imagine what that would be like, to be reminded of something detrimental which you can't remember. And as happy-go-lucky as Rover is, he would probably be able to completely forget that he even has this unknown problem if it weren't for these puzzling dreams.

Awesome writing!

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2016-11-06 05:09:25 +0000 UTC]

Rover certainly could have forgotten all about it. And he still does most of the to!e. I mean he still is on the lookout for people like him but he forgets that something awful happened until he has that dream again.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2016-11-06 17:24:44 +0000 UTC]

About how often does he have that dream, would you say?

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2016-11-06 18:19:59 +0000 UTC]

In these first few weeks every couple nights or so. As time went on they became less frequent. As a young child once a week to once a month. As a young adult every couple months. Now he can go four to six months and even occasionally a year without without having to deal with it.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2016-11-06 23:21:00 +0000 UTC]

Wow, he had them pretty frequently! Which I goes does make sense. Makes me wonder, if he ever does find humans, depending on the circumstances, how that would affect his dreams.

GetToTheLibrary In reply to chill13 [2016-11-06 23:27:02 +0000 UTC]

My folks are both gone, but I have brothers and sisters in the Lord who are good for a hug and a cry when I need someone.

Sometimes, I think, adults grow a little hard and cold towards the pain of children.  Maybe that happens because their own pain has made them bitter, or they never had someone to cry with.   I feel like I see it all around me, all the time.  It troubles my heart.   Because if we grow a little hard now..... the danger is we will grow more hard and cold with age.   That's a frightening prospect...... (there but for the grace of God go we).

I like Soorn because, though he's not educated, he sees his own pain in Rover's pain and isolation.  And he lets his heart be broken.   In that way Soorn is hugging and consoling himself when he hugs Rover.   That is wise.....  the more we (IRL) let our hearts be broken, the more we protect them from turning into stone.

And, if I can be so brash as to presume..... you also give yourself a comforting hug by making these characters to love each other.   That's wise! and the best use of art I know of.   I'm more of a musician than an artist, really an amateur at both, ha ha.   But the point is.....  compassion for our self is hard, for so many people.   No wonder we have such trouble feeling compassion for others.   The pain of life is a harsh schoolmaster.   It defeats a lot of people.   I like your art and your characters because you always seem to get right down to what people really feel and want.

Oh.  I'm sorry to hear that!  At least you have someone to turn to when it gets hard.  And as a Christian you have the hope of seeing them again.  I've never lost a close family member but I have lost some very close friends.  And when I get to missing them I like to think of what I will sayh to them when I see them again.  Because I know it will happen!!

Agreed.  It's really sad when that happens.  People need to be kind and empathetic.  Just because the fear or disaster isn't important to you doesn't mean that it isn't a big deal to the other person.  Thessalonians 5:14 says to "speak consolingly to the depressed souls and to support the weak".

He may not get the exact circumstances but he gets the feeling.  And that's how we should be.  Just because the other person's exact circumstances didn't happen to eoes doesn't mean that we can't remember when we felt awful for some reason or other and  understand that they are going through something tough.

I do indeed.

Thank you for such heartfelt words!  I will treasure them!

I'd love to start reading whole stories that tie into these paintings some day soon.   Are your aspirations to become a story-writer, or an animator, or... ?   Just curious.   You should copyright your characters if you haven't already done so.

Tries is the operative word. He can't truely comprehend what he's going through. But he knows the little thing is upset and he wants to help. And he certainly knows what its like to feel lonely. That he gets.
