Description I really cannot even begin to describe how much I struggled with this doll... I restarted his scarf 4 times before realizing it was too large, and then had to start all over again, had to pull out and redo a few sections as the weren't working together, and then his hat....well...I've not made it a secret that I hate when I have to make hats. Maybe one day I'll make a really good one that will shut me up, lol. At the end of the day though, the struggle to bring this guy to life was worth it I think.

I'm also wondering if there is an award for making what maybe the smallest crochet version of his scarf ever. Will have to check into that...

Anyway! Besides the technique involved with creating the scarf pattern from adaptations of the official pattern, the only new technique involved here is all in the tiny attempt at a fedora. I'd like it more if I could find stiff felt in that color brown I think, but for having no idea how I was going to come about making it, I'm pleased enough with the results.

The scarf actually won out with most annoying piece to make though thanks to all the color changes, but I can definitely say it was worth it.

Materials: Yarn, thread, felt, poly-fil, poly-beads, butttons
Time: 10-12 hours

The Fourth Doctor was quite taken with the doll when he was shown it (though he did worry about the tiny thing sharing in the suffering of having his lovely scarf trampled upon) and, upon finding he wasn't allowed to just take it, offered a bag of jelly babies as compensation before placing the tiny thing in his pocket and running off.

I adore him, especially that you took the time to write a little story about him. I do wish you sold your patterns, however. (being poor, free is even better, but that's neither here nor there, as I just read that you only sell finished products). I am a huge Doctor Who fan. And I do mean HUGE. I got married this fall, and setting the wedding date was entirely dependent on when my tattoo artist would be able to finish the full Doctor Who sleeve I've been chipping away at for the past 4 years. Keep up the amazing work. I love crocheting amigurumi, but I cannot come up with my own style (visualize, I mean) in order to start crocheting my own patterns. Kudos to you for that.

How do I get the pattern?  He is very close to the one I really like.

I'm afraid I don't post/share/sell my patterns. I spend hours designing and creating them, and offer them for sale by commission online or at conventions I attend.

Perhaps you could try contacting the person who makes the one you really like? They may feel differently about sharing their own design. If not, you could always try making your own.

He's so cute! I have to say, you did a very good job on him. How did you do the hair? I myself have never been really good when it comes to hair....

Thank you!

There seems to be 3 schools of thought when it comes to making crochet doll hair that I've found. Personally, I like the look of using wefts, so the hair for all my dolls is made by creating a long sewn together section of yarn, and then sewing it on and styling it. With Four here, since Tom Baker has very curly hair, I just left the loops created by wrapping the yarn when making the weft intact.

Okay thanks, you see I've actually been asked by a friend to make her the 4th doctor for her son and I'm trying to get ideas on how to do this and the hair is what's giving me trouble. I may try wefts and see how it goes. Thanks again!

I know, you know how much working on that scarf frustrated me, lol. He certainly is giving Ten a run for his money on how much brown he wears though doesn't he?

Well I think he's pretty adorable, but it's always good to hear others think so as well. I've had several people over the last year ask if I'll ever sell my patterns for my dolls but differences in tension/stuffing in each doll make standardizing the patterns very difficult.

TheEndingCatastrophe In reply to Craftigurumi [2012-04-17 04:26:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... Do you know where I could find a pattern for just a basic doll like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Craftigurumi In reply to TheEndingCatastrophe [2012-04-17 16:32:19 +0000 UTC]

I adapted my own pattern from a book on making basic doll body parts. I don't have it next to me at the moment to give the title, but they should have it at your local Micheals/JoAnns/crafts store. Lion Brand Yarn has some free patterns as well that you could probably work with to get started.

If you really just want to use my head and body pattern though, that is the only part that keeps consistent, then you can just e-mail me and I'll send it your way.

Thanks a bunch. Are these fairly easy to make (the basic doll body and head)? I'm not very experienced with crocheting, but I know my mum can give me some help if I need it xD Anyway I'll find a pattern soon~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Craftigurumi In reply to TheEndingCatastrophe [2012-04-18 15:25:28 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I'm actually in the process of writing a series of tutorials on making crochet plush items that I'm posting over on the Sprite Stitch forums . The guide to the basics is already finished, and I'm slowly working on one for designing things yourself.

All the crochet parts of my dolls are very simple to do crochet wise. It's just a matter of the time you're willing to invest as to how complex they can become. The head and body shapes are just simple spheres made by working in the round. So as long as you can make a magic circle, know how to increase and decrease and can do single crochet and slip stitches; you should able to make just about any shape.

Feel free to send me a pm here on DA or e-mail me: colies.cute.crafts@gmail.com and I'd be happy to give you any advise and tips that I can if you decide to try and make some amigurumi dolls.
