Side note.
I had an uncle who was a professional hangman for the US Federal prison system back in the early twentieth century.
He was so good he was requested by the condemned.
He made sure it was as quick and as painless as he could.

Also there has been some harsh death sentences some hundred years before, so the executener had to use a blunt axe. It was not uncommon for visitors to make bets on how many strikes were needed to finally kill the prisoner. Well, other times. I guess this raven can make good use on the big axe.

The story behind the guillotine was the problems with ax beheading problems. A desire to be more......humane.
Thomas Cromwell was botched as his executioner was too drunk to strike properly taking several badly aimed chops to do the act.
The last use of the guillotine was 1977.
The executioner needs to be focused. The ax sharp. The strike true.
Better beheading than Hanged, Drawn and Quartered. That would hurt.😬

Yeah, the guillotine has had quite some history.
Though, in earlier times there were some methods, that should be painful. There is a whoule museum of torture in italia, it was quite interesting. Humans can be unbeliefable creative in orde to cause pain to others.
And some methods were... special. Most special killing method yet: Sending into the air! (The person was bound to a heat balloon and send to heaven. But since some had luck and survived when the balloon got down somewhere, it was not practised long.)

Dunking was another strange item.
If you sank and drowned you were innocent.
If you floated......a servant of the devil.🤔
Was also used to punish women who scolded men too much. Dunking cooled their heat.
Personally I think it would make them madder.😬
