Description I was terribly bored today and decided to try my had at watercolor again. I'd only ever done two before, but I really felt like I had a better grip on it this time. I used a conture line drawing I did in art class as a reference, redrew it on watercolor paper in graphite, and then applied the watercolors.

I'm pretty happy with this all around. Anyone who is experenced in watercolor and wants to leave me a tip or crit or two woudl be greatly appreciated. ...yep, I really like watercolors.

Edit: Yes, people, I know it doesn't look like water. That's because it's not water! It's a blue cloth.

I was going thru your DA as one of the DA's that might be worth going thru to see what sort of interesting stuff was on it, but I think I've already gone thru it, that I'd just forgotten about doing so. Has that ever happened to you?

I agree, it's looking very nicely, with a wonderful aquarell look to it, using only few colours and leaving roughly half of the picture white, with only shading on it. the presentation is well done, the water and the stone-like floor each take about the half, with a clear border between them. I'm not sure whether the blue dots and the border work, they somehow don't really fit the style of the drawing, in my opinion, but that could just be me. the writing at the right bottom corner adds to this picture, it looks like it's writen with a real pen onto the aquarell-paper (even though I'm pretty sure it's a font anyhow, but it just suits the more bright style nicely and isn't unnaturally dark or crisp, that's what I meant).
the shading the bottom leaf casts on itself to the left could just be a tad stronger, so it doesn't look just like only one colour being there, and the contrast between the stalk and the leaves raised a bit, but that said, it's surely well done, and the shadows on the stone-floor as well as the shading of the stones underwater, as well as the water itself (being very realistic in colours) sure are an eye-catcher - well done

How pretty. Man, I couldn't do watercolour to save my life, but you've really got it down. I love how you did the flowers petals.

It is simply beaturiful, damphy.
Sorry I can't really give out any pointers. I've never used watercolours. All I can do is just look and admire the wonderful work of art.

What kind of flower is it?

Thank you.

It's some silk flower that I drew in art class. I don't even remember what the real colors were, I just made these up as I went.

I wish I could use watercolors. Oh yes. Ah well - I'm happy to stare at other people's watercolors... I adore the blue in this, and it contrasts with the flower nicely.

lovely watercolor. The leaves could maybe use a shade darker on that one underside, but other than that I find it very spiffy. Nifty painting.

Where's the Print, Missy?

I love watercolor, and especially things like this. Watercolor works wonders for making things more dream-like, soft, and beautiful. And this is no exception.

I love it.

I love watercolors too! They're very relaxing. Your painting is very pretty. I like the way you've let the white show through on parts, especially the leaves. I also like that you can see the texture of the paper through the sand. The grain on the paper looks like grains of sand. I can't and don't watercolor often; (I don't have a set of my own ). But I know some people who do, and the most interesting thing I've seen them do is incorporate colors different than the main color of the object into the shadow areas. Like you did on the shadow under the face of the flower by using blue tones instead of just darkening the color of the sand. But they do this on all or most of the shadow areas. I've tried it once and I liked the way it came out. The only problem I had was forgetting to let the first layer dry for a little bit. If you don't they turn into brown But anyways, I'm rambling.... You should do more watercolors though, this is amazing for a third try. It's very beautiful.

Did you erase the graphite when you were done or did you just do it really light? I always have problems with laying outlines down and then wanting to get rid of them later...

The colors in this are nice and cheery. And I really like the blue, it turned out best. It just looks so well blended and smooth where as the green is a bit splotchy. So my recommendation is to do more of it the same as the blue coloring and maybe use some opaque yellow for some highlights in the middle of the flower (pollen?). The yellow's just a suggestion, but I think it would look cool.

I drew very very very lightly, and then painted over the graphite. I erased it after the watercolor had dried, but if you look closely at it, you can still see the lines. :/ I think that's just a part of dealing with watercolor, though.

I get a sort of vague feeling from this pic... rather dreamy, I guess. Very nice job, I love the colors, and as I said, how relaxing it feels.

Very pretty I especially like the highlights and shadows on the leaves.

And the bright colors. I have an attraction to those!

Since all the more intelligent constructive criticisms were taken I'll just say... Whoa looks great. It would make a great print, on account of the warm emotion portrayed in this piece.

every time I've tried doing watercolors, I end up with something that's two steps shy of an ink blot test...so... I surrender to better painters than I.

Having said that...this is a very lovely piece of work. Your use of white within the range of colors used is really well done...using it as shadows or patterns of light across the flower...

The perspective is also really nice...we really get to see the whole flower and see how it's sitting between (and over) the water and the sand...

- mucho impressed!

I loath watercolours, you have to plan too much, and once you paint something, it's pretty much there forever, unless you layer a darker colour on there. So, I am very impressed with this. Especially since you managed not to kill yourself in the process.

The layers of colour really give the image more of a realistic feel, but the more sharp crisp lines still maintains an element of illustration in it. I enjoy the style, it has a more modern aspect, rather than the classic use of the media. Unfortunately, not many artists use this, most settle for oils.

Ugh.

I love how the strokes vary from more opaque to a less so. This is a nice contrast, especially making such parts like the leafs and stem more dominant. I think that is wise, because the steam leads you through the rest of the piece, and also contrasts so nicely against the pinkish/red hue. The flower really is the main focal point, the rest of the piece is just complementing it.

Although, I have to say, the blue curve of the blanket does really help in leading me through the piece, and to the petals. Plus, the texture contrast with the random pattern does make it more noticeable. This really divides the piece into a the softer part of the counter/table, which is more washed out and neutral. I love how smaller details like the shadow are less noticeable, but after looking at it for awhile you notice it.

You should do more watercolour pieces, they are very creative and add some diversity to your gallery. I love all the new medias you are introducing.

You managed to do well with it. I find watercolors hard myself, but I especially appreciate how you managed to do the strong highlights. A bit of texture work could probably cut down the "plastic" appearance about it, but you still did good with the painting nonetheless

I like how this is colored! The water looks a little too solid to be water, but the flower looks very limp and waterlogged. Also like the highlights. Very nice for a third try (or so?).
