I learned something just a minute ago from watching Mail Call hosted by R. Lee Ermy (the Sergeant from Full Metal Jacket). It seems the K Rations supplied to soldiers during WWII included a pack of cigarettes that were flat. I had never seen a flat coffin nail before until this cat opened a real surviving K Ration box on the show, and there they were. It made me curious to know if Gabe's square ciggies were at all inspired by these relics carried by our boys back in the 40s?
