A beast of a mare, Heart ran practically in slow motion. She placed no higher than 4th and 5ths until her 13th race, which was going to be the race she retired with and moved on to something else. It was a claimer. A dinky little nobody race. Heartbreaker was quiet when saddled, as was her usual way, and moved on out onto the track and into the starting box without a fuss, meek as a mouse. She had amused the crowd watching on the TV's when she reached into the neighboring stall and offered her neighbor a quick friendly grooming nibble and jerked her head back into her own box when he snapped at her and she pinned her ears back the rest of her time in the box looking sulky. The horses broke from the gate just as the rain began to fall, a heavy torrent that abruptly turned the dirt into soup. Heartbreaker chugged along quietly, ears jammed against her head against the mud flying up from other horses and the rain - she was dead last. It was as they neared the turn that she began to move past horses on the outside, a big heaving freighttrain sort of movement - she was overtaking each horse with apparant ease, looking like she was out for a leasurely lope as her long legs ate up the track. As they hit the backstretch she was in third and, with a slightly grumpy snort overtook the last two horses and won by a neck. Everyone was in shock.
Her first races were done with interest, but she didn't ever find her groove. Her last races were better than the first, but still nothing impressive. She was disinterested. Now? She was all interest. She strutted when she went into the winners circle, no one had claimed her so she stayed with her original owner who had seen such promise with her to race her so much with no wins to show.
A good idea, it seems.
Each race after was won with gusto and she retired after her twelveth win, still as sweet and meek as a mouse, but with a sudden fire burning that sent the big train of a mare flying. She bore a foal, BTs Royal Affair after retiring from racing and upon weaning went back into training, having decided she was bored with living in the pasture all day with no interesting diversions, she learned that she could leap like a deer over the fences and escape her enclosures and would amuse herself trotting around the back side of the farm, setting pastures of mares and colts into fits as she wandered around them. She is currently into foxhunting, and loving every bit of it. The hounds delight her, causing her to be nearly overcome with the desire to sniffle and snuffle each one of them. She jumps like a giant and very heavy deer, goes through anything and over everything -- including parked cars when the ground is wet and another horse stumbles and shoves her off the path they are following. // will finish this later
