Description There's magic in squares. If you don't believe me, just look at how almost any photograph wins when it's cropped square. Almost any.

I wonder: what would the Circle of Life look like if we could make it a Square of Life instead?

lol indeed squares rule dA these days... there's something very aesthetically pleasing about square photographs, but still it's important to judge each picture for its own merits!

In this case, GREAT photograph... beautiful lighting, tone and composition... great focus too! Love it

Thank you.

Yes, true, every one still has it's own strengths and downfalls. This was taken in a very pretty moment, too, where the light and air were really pleasing. There were also lots of little flies, bees and tiny butterflies fluttering around these flowers, and in the backlight they glowed like the fairies in Disney-movies do. Tried to capture them, but it was hopeless with this lense; so I decided to let it be and just enjoy the moment right then and there. And I got this.

in a square of life we would feel discontinuities sometimes in the flow of events, or at least abrupt changes of direction

the magic is not in the square per se, but in the image it frames, believe me.

I find that squares hold the same magic that polaroid-film does. Even if you take a photo of an otherwise boring or unoriginal scene, when it's in a square or on pola (on which the image is also square in many cases) it becomes special and interesting to look at. (It doesn't work with every image, but with plenty.) On the other hand, there are some photographs that downright REFUSE to fit into squares.

a square frame gives the image a stillnes and a sense of "stability" that somehow can add something. but the square is not everything... i think that your photo here would be gorgeous even in a common 2/3 frame. imho the frame (whatever the shape) can add but not create beauty.
