Description Okay, second try on uploading this. DA seemed a bit reluctant the first time.

Basically I wanted a spacescape as background for some text for a quote from Homeworld Cataclysm (It's Naggarok's "For a million years" line, for those of you in the HW know. ) and it needed to be quite red in color.

So I built this one up after some hits and misses in trying to remember the specifics of Greg Martin's tutorial, for I lost the URL a while ago. The orange planet is an original, while the yellow moon is a planet I'd saved in storage from some other spacescape I did. I just recolored it.

Anyways, I didn't bother to do anything particularly fancy with the stars, so they don't look all flashy and stuff. I just wanted something pretty for my desktop. Then I realized it'd make a nice submission, so I thought I'd put it up here. No text, nothing extra. Just the spacescape.

It's probably not perfect, and I'm sure someone's going to find something to comment on it with. That's okay. Like I said, I wasn't trying to do anything real fancy.

Enjoy.

It's nothing too special, but it does the job. The red hue of the image certainly brought out the Beasty essence in the picture. Now for an obligatory quote: "We know you BETTER than you know yourselves..."

And here I'd thought people had forgotten Cataclysm. XD Thanks.

I believe I'm right in understanding that Cataclysm is Norsehound's least favourite out of the games?

Yes, you are right. He has some good points, and points I -really- don't agree with, but there they are.

The problem is you can spot a lot of the same plotholes in Homeworld 2, and mention them to him, but he sees HW2 with a pair of rose-colored sunglasses. Much as I liked some aspects of HW2, it's actually not my favorite of the HW games.

Everyone has their personal preferences and love/hate for each game. Norse is probably just an extreme case of Cataclysm dislike. Oh well.

Indeed. Although, despite never having played Cataclysm myself (I don't have it), I have to disagree with him on the whole "The voice acting in that game was/is terrible" thing. Personally, I quite like the voice acting in Cata.

I'll admit, for being a a relatively minor miner Kiith (See what I did there?), they certainly had an insane array of weaponry, especially when it came to the Super-Capital Class ships. They also became Instant Experts when it came to taking technology from other races (i.e, the Turanic Raiders' "Mimic Device", as I call it). Then again, so did the Exiles whenever taking a ship (for gameplay purposes, obviously, but still...).

Yeah there's a bit of magic hand-waving there. It does hearken back to the first Homeworld, but at least the Exiles had a minimum of 60 years, if not more, to develop some of the ground basis for a lot of their tech. Somtaaw worked off of that technology, and whatever else they'd learned about - be it Taiidan, Kadeshi (their hive frigates and swarmer drones smack of a tech-swipe from the 'deshi, as do the MBFs) or whatever.

Actually if you really think about it, the Somtaaw operate rather like a faction we know all too well in HW2: The Vaygr.

Charismatic leader, space-roaming fleet that borrows off of whatever technology they come across or can backengineer, building a warfleet to kick the asses of anyone who try to mess with them....

Get the idea? The Kuun-Lan is even a believable flaaagship.

"Children of Hiigara, you are beaten." I can only imagine their outrage at him mis-pronouncing the name. The Hiigarans say it like "Hee-ga-ra" , whilst Makaan said "High-ga-ra".

Nope. It's actually the only one I don't have; I am determined to get my claws on it. (I have very long nails...) I seem to be better at HW that HW2.

DeepChrome In reply to Tynorg-Six [2013-03-24 00:53:33 +0000 UTC]

Heh. HW2 is structured -very- differently from HW, even though it is a successor. It's been noted that Relic may have been forced to rush on parts of it by Sierra, and that it probably needed more time cooking and coming together. Some features of it are great, some are just annoying as hell.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tynorg-Six In reply to DeepChrome [2013-03-24 10:26:04 +0000 UTC]

I would've preferred them keeping HW's Formations structure. I didn't like constructing whole squadrons at a time - yes, it was time-saving, but you couldn't increase or decrease squadron size or anything like that.

Also, modules are definitely one of the game's downsides. Whilst they get you to think about destroying the production modules on a ship before destroying the actual ship, I personally found them quite annoying. As we all know, in HW you simple had to research and, if you had enough RUs for the job, you could build it.

In HW2, you have to do the research (which costs RUs, another downside) THEN build a module in order to build the ships.

A good game, but has its downsides in comparison to the original.

DeepChrome In reply to Tynorg-Six [2013-04-05 01:48:15 +0000 UTC]

Yup. I've played all 3. There's ups and downs, but definitely the subsystems and modules were something that didn't really work for the game.

Although in Cataclysm, it was definitely better handled. Research modules/crew modules allowing a boost in tech and ships. If you lost all of them (say someone hit you with a Siege Cannon shot that didn't completely destroy you) you had to rebuild them. But it wasn't quite like the subsystems in HW2, which were...kind of ridiculous.

In terms of realism, subsystems make some sense. But in terms of gameplay, they weren't always the best idea.

A few HW2 mods have tried to modify this into something more believeable, and I've played some, and a couple really do make the subsystems more practical. Others...kind of go overboard.

Probably between an hour to three hours. I don't look at the clock--rather I look at what I'm doing.

Doing the nebulae in the starfield is what took the most time. *sigh* I like to texture them with eraser in texture mode as well as more straight-up brushwork to refine them sometimes.

I spent a lot of time building up space scenes etc in my free time, so to know you did that with a tablet... *claps*

I especially like the built up effect of the planets surface...

DeepChrome In reply to milleniumsentry [2006-07-26 00:31:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

It takes the right tutorial. I learned off Greg Martin's site.

However, the tablet is simply awesome for detailing a nebula with. That probably chewed up the most time on this one. That and the planet's surface.

(As you said with Purple Space, I've got to practice more to get the realism bite better. It seems to me, the placement of the bigger stars are what'll cinch the deal or not. Would you agree?)

StreetShadow In reply to DeepChrome [2006-06-01 21:47:51 +0000 UTC]

Your welcome.

I'm not an expert on realism effects, let alone the basics. So sorry I can't be sure to agree or not. Do you have other color space art like Red Space and Purple Space?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeepChrome In reply to StreetShadow [2006-06-01 21:50:13 +0000 UTC]

Yup. There's some older stuff further back in my gallery right after I found the tutorials that taught me to do this. There's a blue/green one, a purple one....and I think a yellow/orange one...not sure about that last one. But there are some. And if you go further back you'll find some raw-digitalpaintbrush attempts at space art too. So it's scattered through my gallery and hiding in the fractals.

Blech I remember exams. NOT. FUN. They continued right into uni. At least at high school they gave us half days. Mornings spent doing finals, the rest of the day off. That was nice.

Take your time man. I hope you do well.
