Description In a storm of fog, dust, rocks, and steam, an Indian on horseback leads a team of Buffalo thundering across the grassy plain.

This is the next work in my Western Art series. It was most definitely inspired by the paintings of Fredrick Remington. If you Google him, you'll actually find a number of images with stampeding horses in a line charging at the viewer.

I actually based the composition on an eye. If you draw a line from one edge to the other along the heads of the bison and the Indian, then a second line along the hoofs, you get a rough shape of an eye where the man on horseback is the pupil. The idea is to give the viewer a sense that the picture is looking back at them. I've done similar images using the "eye" concept before with "The Buffalo Vanguard" ( [link] ) and "Thunder on the Plains" ( [link] ), but this one emphasizes it a bit more.

Note: this scene uses purchased content.

Tools used: Blender, Poser, Vue, GIMP

Thanks for looking!
Daniel

Beautiful and I never noticed the eye concept, until I scrolled down where you talked about it... Pretty cool concept.
Also, I think the warrior looks a bit like Lou Diamond Phillips

I like what you do with your work and what you use the tools for. If I were to make a couple of suggestions for a lot of the pieces you use rocks and mountains etc, I find a lot of the meshes are very "blobby" A good texture on a blobby mesh looks like just that. Vue gives some amazing simulation stuff for environments but does it use Depth of field? I've only ever used it as an addon in other software. Some DOF effects would make a lot of your subjecs "pop" from the backgrounds. Rendering everything as crisp as possible makes things look flat. If you use Zbrush, you can take some of those blobby rock meshes and make them look real and convincing. A chain is only as good as it's weakest link.Β

Other than those things you have some great looking stuff.

Vue does have DOF, but I don't use it. Β I come from a traditional painting background and I like my digital images to have that style where everything is in focus rather than looking like a photo. Β Yeah, the standard terrains in vue make for somewhat weak mountains, but I've been using Vue's procedural terrains for some of my more recent stuff which do tend to look a little better.

AHA ok Yeah I can see how that works if you are going for a more traditional "painted" feel Good job! If you ever want some rocks or stuff modeled, let me know. I'd be more than happy to help.
