Chapter 2

Smoke continued to darken the sky even after the fire was out. The red sky seemed to feed the blackness yet was welcoming instead of flames. The dunes grass here was still healthy and green. It was sad to think that it could have all been ash.

The white stallion, Avery, stood at the top of a small hill. He had collected his friends and family away from their burned home in the dunes. His blue eyes scanned the few horses that were left after the devastation. His mate was circled by healers at the center of the herd. She has sustained serious burns along her legs and stomach and was now unresponsive.

Avery paced as every nerve he had was on end. His nostrils flared and ears pinned to the back of his head in worry. His mane and tail were burned and frizzed from the fire. He couldn't bare to think that she wouldn't make it, let alone his first born that she was carrying.

As he paced around on the hill, a small red chestnut mare walked up to him.

“Avery… you need to compose yourself. The herd is in turmoil. They need you to be strong.” She spoke softly, but her voice seemed to hold more age and wisdom than her appearance did.

“But I can't Charlie. Not until I know Sayyida is okay. I've already lost so many… Catalina, Jade, Hook, Teague, even Ruth. I don't know how I can handle this.” His voice cracked when I said his commanders mate, Ruth. “What do I say to them? How can I tell Scotty that her mother isn't coming back? I can't even get Syndicate to talk now that Jade is gone. I can't do this.” He shook his head, flinging tears into the dry grass. He jump back with a squeal as the mare nipped his shoulder.

“Avery! Get a hold of yourself. You are better than this! You need to be strong for them.” Her own icy blue eyes met his. “Especially Sayyida. You haven't even been near her since last night. She needs you. Stop being a coward.” Charlie snorted and turned her back on him to return to the herd.

Avery sighed and hung his head. She needs me… I have to be strong, he thought to himself before lifting his head and walking down to the herd.
