Entry 2 for ‘s Fairytale Twist contest. Needs moar glitter! D8<

This is based on a fairly obscure fairy tale: The White Cat. I loved this story as a kid largely due to the illustrations by Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone.

Kagome is in the role of the prince, while Sesshoumaru occupies that of the white cat. I just thought it would be funny for him to be trapped as a cat for hundreds of years. Below is my summary of the story + an abbreviated version of said summary.

Basic story:
In the story there is an issue with succession to the throne, so the king sends out his three sons to find him the prettiest, smallest dog. On his travels, the youngest son comes across a mysterious castle that is home to an intelligent white cat. She agrees to help him and she sends him back with a tiny dog just before the year is up. The youngest son essentially wins, but the king decides to send them out on another quest. (The king’s Rick-rollin that throne! )

The white cat helps again, the prince wins again, the king sends them out again- this time for a bride. The prince spends the year with the white cat, at the end of which the cat implores the prince to behead her because it’s the only way she can help him. He reluctantly does so, and she immediately transforms into a princess because that’s totally what happens when you behead something. She proceeds to tell the story of how she was enchanted, they return to the king, she starts handing out kingdoms like candy, good times are had by all, the end.

tl;dr
Sesshoumaru=cat. Kagome beheads cat. Poof. Cat=>Sesshoumaru. Happily Ever After.

*EDIT: Thank you everyone for the lovely comments, and faves! I'll get around to replying to everyone soon! And the version of the story I based this on is from "Dean's a Book of Fairy Tales, 1977 ed." Various versions of Madame d'Aulnoy's tale can be found online by Googling "The White Cat." *

*EDIT 2: Since people were asking about the original illustrations, I've posted a coupe of pictures on my photobucket of the Johnstones' beautiful work. I based their costumes on these originals.

Materials:
Copic markers, random prismacolor colored pencils, 01 Sepia Micron, white gel pen, shimmery gold paint you can’t see, tea-aged paper, and most importantly: a.d.d.-ness in photoshop.

Oh my goodness! This was my favorite fairytale as a little girl but I don't see many people reference it!
I had my father tell me this story so many times! (I'm not sure where he learned it, but he had a version memorized)

Lovely art.

You should read The White Cat by Holly Black. When I read it I didn't see it attributed to this legend in any way, and it's probably just because the fairy tail is such a tiny tiny piece of that story. But it's good book and I found out a little after I read it about this fairy tail. Anyway, I like Kagome in her dress with the sword it's just cool.

It's a great fairy tale, and it's kind of unfortunate that it's fairly obscure and not many people know it.

Good luck on your picture, and thank you! c:

I think it'd be better if Kagome had to spit out white fur from her mouth in order to de- cat him.

I know, right? It's totally the kind of story that Disney goes for, but I guess it is a little obscure.

WinterPassing10 In reply to Doodleholic [2012-04-16 15:19:54 +0000 UTC]

its only obscure because disney didnt make a movie for it haha. but either way its a great story. i like how its about a prince instead of a princess.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Doodleholic In reply to WinterPassing10 [2012-04-16 16:23:13 +0000 UTC]

True that! I know! It's a nice change from the standard of fairytales being about the princess. I still think Disney should do it. Maybe some day. c:

Im usually really a stuck up bitch (And really fucking blunt) and try to find everything wrong with someone's picture. but I find no flaws. This is one of the most beautiful SessKag Photo's I've seen in a long time my dear. So beautiful And The white cat, is a excellent story although I have not heard it in a while. Its not really a well known story either but I love your use of coloring and Kagome-san's Facial expressions! People usually cannot capture great facial expressions thats why I find this so well done and I'm so proud of your work here. you deserve a clap. well done.

Wonderful colors, I really like the story-bookish feel. I just find Sesshoumaru’s left arm a little awkward, like it’s too short, but other than that, lovely piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Doodleholic In reply to penxil [2011-01-21 17:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

I knew someone else would notice the arm! xD I actually realized this when I started coloring it, but I just didn't work on it once I scanned it. I should have bent the arm back a bit at the elbow to make it look more natural/less tense. As it is, it's too straight, which makes it look incredibly strange if you stop to look at it.
