“When are you gonna shave all that shit off yer head, Syd ?” Justin asked, twirling a strand of Sydney's long hair around his finger. It wasn't like Sydney to keep it so long. With spring on its way, he'd usually buzz it all off by now. It was too "hot" was the usual deciding factor.
“I ain't,” Sydney proclaimed, almost proud of it. He snapped a stirrup down after adjusting its height, making sure the leather didn't bunch up under it and it hung even with the other. “My new bitch likes it long,” he smirked without looking at Justin's reaction.
Justin chuckled, torn on how to respond to that. On one hand, he was happy for Sydney starting to pick up all his pieces and moving on. On the other hand, was he really okay? “Well, you do look awful cute, I s'pose. He like to braid it too?” Justin snickered, unable to resist the jeer.
Sydney glanced down at Justin, raising a brow, “Yea. Right ‘fore he rides the life outta my dick.” Sydney slapped Justin's arm hard enough he staggered sideways while he was in a state of shock. He didn't know what stunned him more: Sydney openly talking about his relationship with Jarin (this is Mr. "Not Gay" we're talking about) or the mental image of what he just described. Damn.
Justin didn't know what to expect from Sydney after he told him that the divorce papers were being finalized. He and Krissa were no longer. He was officially split from her. A marriage ended. Naturally, all of the ugliness that came with it was still to be handled: who gets what, how much, and when, and all that. And with Jarin touring the world to become some circus act, Justin feared the worst for Sydney. He had been so… so not himself for so long Justin didn't even remember how they used to kid around and laugh all the time.
Justin mounted up on a spotted mare, ungraciously named Glory for her full name was chosen by someone with the maturity stunted to a sixteen year old boy's sense of humor. One Justin McBride, forever a boy trapped in a man's body. She was fresh from Sydney's training along with his newer mount, Duck . They both came from a deal with the Tharoksu breed to showcase the breed's broad versatility. Prove they were more than dressage horses or whatever stigma came attached to the endangered breed. Their rustic, hardy builds were very handy for western disciplines too. Another breed facing extinction because who wanted a "nobody" breed when grabbing a Quarter Horse was so much easier?
“So, it's really all final, eh?” Justin asked, watching Sydney do some basic flexion with Duck while they waited for their go at the trail course.
“Sure as shit,” Sydney confirmed. “I'm gonna frame the fuckin’ piece of paper and hang it on my wall. I'm as unmarried as your ass. Only at least I got some practice in. What's yer excuse?” Sydney grinned, more than happy to trash Justin while he was at it. It was all in good fun.
“Shoot, they all been sayin’ the same thing. Somethin’ ‘bout it's too big. Tsk, their loss, I reckon,” Justin laughed and laughed harder when Sydney got a rise out of the joke too. Because they both knew that was not the case in any situation. Justin was as average as they came! Justin wiped a tear, letting Glory follow beside Sydney and Duck just to get some movement. “Well, I'm glad it's workin’ out for ya, Syd. You seem a lot less of a steamin’ douchebag like ya been fer too long.”
“Yea, well, it's fuckin’ hard to have a goddamn bit of happiness when Krissa had me by my balls. She was fixin’ to geld me if I didn't get the fuck outta there.”
“Ya know, some fellers are into that,” Justin added just to keep things light. He wasn't going to agree it was Krissa that made him a douche. That was on Sydney's shoulders squarely. But he did understand it was tough on the big guy.
Sydney shook his head, “Suckin’ and fuckin’, but don't go rippin’ at my nuts. She ain't playin’ that game no more,” Sydney huffed.
Justin reached over and bumped Sydney's shoulder with his knuckles. A kind of bro code - he understood what he went through. (Kind of) What he was still going through. Love wasn't fair. Falling out of love was even more so unfair and those two had turned it into a kind of war zone. “You tell yer brothers yet?”
“Fuck no,” Sydney answered without hesitation like it was insane Justin even asked. “Fuckin’ Guth took a swing on me jus’ fer mentionin’ she was sleepin’ ‘round. Ya'd think he was her brother, not mine.”
“Ahhhh, well, Guthrie's just the enforcer type, is all. He prolly didn't mean it…” That was a lie and they both knew it. Guthrie went by strict rules and those that broke them got their nose broken. Sydney, his own little brother, was no exception.
“Nah…fuck ‘em,” Sydney resigned quietly, flipping his reins loose on Duck's neck. “They'll figure it out. I ain't got no reason goin’ back anyway. Ain't needed them fer years. And I don't need ‘em now.”
Justin tipped his head to the side in thought. A beat later he perked up again, "Wait, y'ain't goin' back to yer ranch neither?"
Sydney's shoulders slumped slightly, looking off to the ocean down the hillside. "Nah...I dunno... thinkin' I'll sell the place. Start over."
Justin didn't like that. Sydney had already sank so much time and money into that ranch. Sure, it wasn't going to be anything like the Brannon Ranch but it was a sizeable farm with a lot of potential. The Brannons were a tight family. They always had been. He admired that about them when he first started working on the ranch and making friends with all the brothers (and of course trying his hardest to court Tequila ). They did, however, have their rough patches, like any family. Unfortunately, Sydney wouldn't be the first they turned on. One uncle in the family had been cast out for a divorce already several years ago and it painted this ugly image over the family ever since. No one really talked about it. Justin always figured there was probably more to it by the way the oldest brothers, Brody and Guthrie, got all tight about the subject when he asked. And then there was the whole Bart situation. That got bad fast. He hated thinking anything bad of the family. They gave him and his mother so much when he was growing up. He had nothing but fond memories on that ranch. It was sad to see Sydney so willing to cast himself away without even talking to his family first.
Justin forced him to smile, reining his mare closer, bumping knees with Sydney. He knew how to lighten the mood. He leaned closer, “Well, I need you, Syd. Will you be my big brother? I could sure use one. You know I always wanted one. Pretty pleeeease~”
Sydney had a boyish giggle, shoving Justin away from him and having to check Duck that threatened to throw a hoof at the mare too close to him. “I ain't wipin’ yer ass.”
“Awww, c'mon, Syd-o buddy-o pal-o mine! I'm lonely all on my lonesome! Hold my hand?”
Sydney looked at Justin's outstretched hand that made him smirk. Justin knew just about everything there was to Sydney; everything good and everything ugly and disgusting. From days learning to flip calves to get branded to motherfucking his ass for being such a piece of shit to everyone around him. He was right to treat him like the asshole he was. But Justin didn't just dump him in the garbage when anyone else would have and probably should have. He knew who Sydney really was underneath all the masks he put on to hide his shame, his embarrassments, his broken bleeding heart he refused to acknowledge or take any means to mend. He knew that even though his parents would never look at him the same, Justin didn't hesitate for a second to come to Sydney when he needed him even if he didn't know it.
“Aight, ya lil’ cum dumpster, c'mere,” he grinned, taking Justin's hand. A term of endearment between the two of them, honestly.
“Syd, yer gonna make me blush,” Justin giggled.
“You asked for it.” He took it a step further, intertwining their fingers together, both of them laughing harder. Duck was not okay with this, pinning his ears, getting corrected by Sydney, swishing his tail, getting corrected again. Glory sidestepped at every gesture, not wanting to get killed by the stallion. But Sydney didn't let go of Justin, threatening to pull him out of his saddle, teasing Justin that he better catch up or fall off, his choice! He wanted this, after all.
Justin was willing to step up to the plate and take the challenge. Not just the goof-assery they were boyishly giggling over, getting odd looks and laughs from others around. But the deeper matters of the heart. Even shitbags like Sydney could use a friend to set them straight when they needed it and hold their hand even if they didn't want it. Because maybe one day Justin would need a friend like Sydney to do the same for him.

Justin is the ultimate friend. He has been there for Sydney from day one. From middle school to his wedding to now his divorce and he'll stay by his side going forward too. I mean, a blast from the past, these boys have been wildin' for a long time xD

So Justin's really just happy to have his friend back <''3 He knows he's back because he can actually take a joke and not immediately throw up all his defenses when talking about Jarin. PROGRESS.
Character development is really tough for a character like Sydney. He comes off as simple but he's pretty complex on the inside when it comes to emotions. He's so resistant to emotional growth. It has to be his idea. He has to make the choice to move forward. Justin has been trying so hard for so long to nudge him out of his funk but Sydney won't budge when met with force. It's not until everyone stopped trying to push or pull him - Justin laid off, Jarin let him off the hook - so that left him to make his choice. C'mon, Syd, let's move forward, bud <''3
I have destroyed Sydney's character for so long now, we've got a LONG uphill climb to repair the damages done.
I could have held onto this art for a while longer, ya know, space things out since I uploaded not too long ago but eh, what's the point in that? I work on projects at home until I have to go to work and then I work on a different project at work xD And I just happened to finish them up around the same time! So have some art~
I...dunno what style I was going for? I just wanted to do the cool scenery for the location of the show <3 Flowers and life and a breath of fresh air~ And play with some clouds~
Oh, and hello new ponies that get art~ (sorry all the old ponies still not getting love xD recency-bias is a bitch lololol)
