STORY
When Madison had mentioned a 'family outing' to Mason, the idea of catching a plane and torturing Rosa with his dad jokes for 15 hours sounded perfect, so he eagerly agreed. He forgot that Canada, being on the other side of the globe would be cold though.
He rugged up in his thickest jacket and donned a scarf, ready to face the bitter wind and lack of hot sun. He almost opted for a beanie instead of his hat, and that is saying something. Mason and Aiden met the others at Mercury Stables as they perused the sea of gorgeous horses that were available. Aiden and Madison excitedly explored the stalls, 'ooh'-ing and 'aah'-ing at every horse, saying "THIS IS THE ONE, I NEED THIS HORSE" at literally every horse they saw.
Mason and Rosa walked slowly through, observing the horses thoughtfully. Rosa on one hand was making comments like, "Hmm, this one has a lovely wide chest, cross-country perhaps?", while Mason would occasionally giggle and blurt out, "Hah, this one has a funny face, just look at him!". He could feel Rosa's eyes roll with every word he spoke.
Throughout the day, Madison and Aiden had tried most of, if not all of the horses. Deciding definitively after each that 'this was the one they wanted'. Rosa had sat back, observing the two ride, taking in the horse's gate, how they moved and their musculature. Mason was watching and observing how well the horse's coat colour matched their aesthetics.
After sitting back for most of the afternoon, Aiden came over to Mason with a pouty look on his face. "Why aren't you trying any!?" Mason furrowed his brow.
"You know I only ride Mustard, it'd be like I'm cheating on him if I try, let alone get another horse!" Mason looked off as if thinking of his grumpy stallion at home. Aiden crossed his arms and looked at him.
"You know as well as I do that he is lazy, grumpy and likes being on his own. He would probably appreciate it if you had another horse that you could ride in between if it meant he had more time to roll in the dust and sleep." Mason hadn't thought of that. He looked down, with an expression of deep thought on his face, eyes moving side to side as if reading a complex math equation.
"Alright, let's do it." Mason and Aiden went back to the stabled horses and paced back along the corridor until stopping in front of one. A bright chestnut mare, with a dusting of white on her rump. She was pacing in her stall, excitedly looking around at all that was happening around her. She seemed enthralled by all the activity and was pawing at the dirt, keen to get out and join in the fun.
Mason lead her out to the outside arena, where Madison was trying out a gorgeous palomino mare. He could see Rosa looking over at the pair, with a surprisingly approving look on her face; a first really.
Mason tightened the saddle a final time before putting his foot in the stirrup, placing his weight on it and began to lift himself over when the mare decided it was go-time. She immediately started to move, and quickly. Mason gasped some obscenities as the ground was pulled from under him, and he tumbled backward. A plume of dust flew up from the ground around him as it got very quiet.
Mason managed to get his foot out from the stirrup after being dragged a few meters, sat upright, and to everyone's surprise, he had a huge grin on his face.
"Oh yeah, I want this one." The collective sighs from Aiden and Rosa rang out, and their disapproving expressions were almost audible. Aiden rubbed his forehead and muttered something about having to house another difficult horse while Rosa simply ignored the dust-covered man as he tried a second time to mount the horse, successfully thankfully. Madison and her mare walked over to him and she giggled.
"I like her too, I think you'll be a great match."
