STORY

It was the second day of the Expo, and it was drawing to an end. It was in the afternoon, the skies had cleared up to a beautiful blue and the sun was descending, ready to drop behind the horizon over the next few hours. Earlier in the day, Aiden competed in the novice showjumping; now it was Mason's turn to compete. Mason checked his tack for the final time before mounting, one foot in the stirrup, he lifted himself on and looked over at his friends and partner at the barrier, looking on. Aiden was there, rugged up as the afternoon cooled off. Madison, his niece was watching too, eyes filled with curiosity at foreign western disciplines. The newest member of HPR's sister-stable, Oliver was watching too, he, on the other hand, was familiar with all that was happening as he grew up with a similar riding style.

Mason rode the sturdy stallion over to the starting area, as always the horse was snorting and pawing at the sand with excitement. Mason pushed him into action, as they kicked off the start and quickly accelerated toward the first barrel, unfortunately, a little too quick with Mustard's excitement. They went wide around the barrel as the thoroughbred didn't slow quite early enough. It probably added a second or two onto their time, but Mason didn't linger on it as they charged toward the second barrel, this time, coming in closer, but still a little wide as the excited Mustard was running a bit too fast and hot. Up to the top of the arena, to the final barrel, Mason felt more in control, he slowed Mustard at just the right time, taking a tight corner around the top of the barrel, just inches from the metallic tin, dust and pebbles bounced off as Mustard's hooves dug into the sand. Around the went, and they were on the home stretch now. Mason pulled himself lower on the horse as he kicked Mustard's sides, pushing him into a speedy gallop. The thoroughbred's neck extended, his mane flying back behind him as he sprinted across the arena. They crossed the threshold, and Mustard skidded to a stop. The sand lingered in the air, then the cloud began to drop as the pair caught their breath. The announcer read out their time, and it was good too, better than the times Mason was pulling in training for this event.

As his focus came back to reality, he could hear his trio of 'fans' cheering from the sidelines. He spun Mustard around to face them and gave them a small friendly wave with a big grin. He walked Mustard out of the arena and headed on back to the stables, ready to warm the stallion down and probably give him a wash given he was now covered in sand. The muffled sound of the announcer could still be heard as he walked back, but other than that, it was nice and quiet. The sound of his horse's strong puffs of breath and his hooves crunching on the dirt paths rang out as Mason looked over the gorgeous land the stable was situated on.

"You did good, boy." Mason quietly muttered, ruffling Mustard's mane as they walked.
