------ STORY -----
Mason stood outside, the morning sun tingling his skin as he took a deep breath in. It was nice to be back in America, albeit in New York and not his homey Arizona, but nice all the same. The familiar accents drifted through the crowd as he wandered the expo. Everyone was still getting set up for the day, and so was he. He was only competing in one event this day and it was the first of the day too so the pressure was on to impress.
The steam from his coffee he picked up at the food vendors wafted the rich, dark smell to his nose as he took the first sip, sighing dramatically after.
"It's a nice day for it, not a cloud in the sky." Mason muttered distantly, looking up at the birds fluttering up from the nearby trees into the vast blue.
Aiden came on over, hot green tea in hand. He nudged Mason's shoulder, letting him know he was there and pulling him from his dazed, morning state.
"You're really not a morning person are you." Mason looked over at him, raising his eyebrow, curious to see why he was mentioning it. "You do realise you forgot your vest..."
Mason looked down at his outfit, indeed lacking his well-loved, worn and tattered leather vest. "Oh, GREAT!" Mason grunted sarcastically, furrowing his eyebrows in frustration. "Well, I guess we know how t'day's gonna go then. I've never won anything without that vest on... I've doomed myself now." He rubbed his forred with his free hand, pushing his hair back under his hat, then set it back down in place.
"Who knows," Aiden began, a soft, comforting smile on his face, "maybe I'm you're lucky charm and you'll do well anyway." Mason laughed breathily and without much conviction. Still, he pulled his partner to him in a sideward, one-armed hug, planting a gentle kiss on his forred.
"You've gotta be damn lucky to out-luck that vest, but I'm counting on it." Mason smiled back at him. "Alright, I've gotta run, I've got some reining to win." Mason headed to where his favourite boy was stabled, mentally preparing himself for the disapproving attitude he'd have to deal with for making Mustard work this early in the day. They were both night owls and their day starts at noon, at the earliest.

Warmed up, hearts beating; Mustard and Mason walked up into the indoor arena to the entrance point. He could see the pair performing before him running a set of circles in the arena, they were moving beautifully; loose reins and steady body control. The dust flicked up from the sand, glistening in the late morning sun. Mason put his hand in his back pocket, pulling out his creased photo of Aiden, thumbing it affectionately.
"Aight' lucky charm, time to work your magic." He put the photo back into his pocket, walking toward the start point as the other competitor left. Ready for action, Mustard snorted and pawed the sand before they kicked into gear.
