Well, I'll have to say that your portrays of Finduilas are truly wonderfull and illustrate her almost as I have always imagined her to be. Her soft features and that long flow of golden hair are spot on.

What comes to Túrin and his "unability" to respond her love, I think that one reason was that Túrin saw her more like a sister or even a mother figure. Like he himself says in that quote above. Someone who resembled his own people and kin (that golden hair), now long lost. Other reasons may have been those basic traits of his, that reservedness , that silent and solemn nature of his. In most part of his personality he was truly his mothers son. Not eager to show his thoughts or heart to anyone. And finally I think that Túrin was never very accustomed to be with women and to "understand" them.  In Dor-lómin and Doriath he was just a child most of the time and even Nellas was more of a teacher and playing friend to him than something else. I doubt that he actually spent much time with Melian, who obviously had many important matters being a queen of Doriath. And when he aged, he started to think more of "the ways of men and warrior" which led him to be away of Doriath and its female denizens for long time.

Sorry about my rant of Túrin but I am a Tolkien enthusiast and it is difficult to talk about Finduilas without him.

I have been enjoying your Finduilas series. I never thought of her as an ash blonde, but it seems to work here, especially with a nighttime illumination.
Turin didn't acknowledge her love, and one is left to wonder what might have happened if Finduilas had won his heart. So why wouldn't he notice?
1. Turin is a clueless man, and he doesn't notice subtle hints.
2. Turin is fixated on his feud with Morgoth, and has no time for peaceful pursuits.
3. Turin knows that Funduilas is supposed to be Gwindor's fiance, so he is trying to be a good friend.
Any one might be a good motive. Which one would you pick?

I'm glad that she has pleased your eye! I certainly intended for her to look lovely on my pieces. As to her hair colour, it's a touch difficult to show golden colour on black and white portraits... However, her hair looks more or less 'right' on my first, fully coloured portrait of her.
And yes, I did wonder, how on earth could the beautiful Finduilas leave Turin cold - after all, she must have been one of the most gorgeous females (in addition to Melian and a few others, perhaps) he ever encountered. The most likely answer seems to be that in that particular matter his heart remained unmoved because of the curse.
As to your point No 1, it almost made me fall off of my chair, as I had already intended to paint a portrait of him with a headline 'Clueless'! ;-D That would summarize certain problems of his very well...
Remember how socially awkward he was already as a child, well before anyone had cursed him? People didn't like him much, and he found it hard to open his own heart to them. And when he grew older in the protective circle of Melian, where Morgoth could not infuence him, he was completely blind both to the friendship and love that *another* elleth, Nellas, felt for him. Leaving aside the astounding fact that we have a mere mortal, whom two (!) elven women find attractive, he is quite obviously emotionally dysfunctional.
Thank you so much for your intriguing comment! I love the ones that stimulate the reader's intellect.

I'm glad to have provided such a nice response. The "clueless" argument sounds like total snark, but it does have some validity due to Turin's upbringing, as a prince in exile dedicated to war against the Power that caused said exile. In a more serious light, Finduilas might have not understood Turin's all-encompassing desire to strike back at Morgoth however he could, and to do anything possible to halt the Shadow falling over Beleriand. It might have been something from Tolkien's own memory of wartime service, and the lack of understanding between civilians (no matter how caring) and the soldiers who had gone into Hell and come out changed, and not always for the better.

Thank you for your lovely comments, dear Zionista!
Tolkien's works have surely been affected by his war experience, but in this particular case of 'cluelessness', I did not mean to sound cruel or arrogant towards Turin - not at all. I'm simply saying that he is quite literally unable to notice or understand the nature of Finduilas' affection for him. Remember how he unsuccessfully tried to figure out the reason for her growing sadness, and Gwindor's increasing coolness towards him? He clealry hadn't been blessed with good social skills, the ability to read between the lines or to take hints. I'd bet that the poor Finduilas' massive crush on him was obvious to everyone else at her father's court.

A lovely comment! IMO, Finduilas has mostly been overlooked. But then, most of Tolkien's female characters deserve more attention than they have received.

Yes, and while I love many works done on the central male characters from Tolkien's tales, I'd love it if people paid more attention to some who are also most interesting, but have strangely become 'abandoned' by the most readers and artists (e.g. Gwindor, but many others as well).
