“Mamae?”

“Vin emma ma’lath?” Delani replied without looking up from her task of folding linens.

Her daughter crawled across the bed and kneeled beside her, intently watching Delani with big, curious, hazel eyes. When finally Delani looked her way, she asked, “Are you my real mamae?”

A frown twisted Delani’s features for a moment, surprised by the question. She placed the folded clothes onto the growing pile atop the bed and turned to face her daughter better. Tucking an errant curl behind her ear, Delani assured her, “Of course I am, ma’vherain.” She held her daughter’s chin on her knuckle and brushed her thumb over her cheek. Gently she wondered, “Why do you ask?”

Little hands reached for Delani’s ears. There was a frown on her little face as she felt the pointed tips of Delani’s ears before retracting her hands to test her own. “Your ears are pointy but mine aren’t.”

The corner of Delani’s mouth curled into a smirk. She also felt the rounded edge of her daughter’s ears and explained, “That’s because you have your father’s ears.” She then pinched her daughter’s cheek, making her laugh. “And his smile, and his wit.” Bopping the tip of her nose, Delani then added, “Luckily you inherited my nose.”

The smile started to fade from the little girl’s mouth as her thoughts returned to where they’d originally been. “But I want to have ears like yours.”

“You don’t like your ears, ma’vherain?” she asked, tilting her head a bit as she regarded the four year old.

Little shoulders bounced with her shrug. “How will everyone know that you are my mamae if we don’t have the same ears?”

Delani’s heart tightened in her chest. Had someone teased her daughter? Where had this come from? Somewhere in the back of Delani’s mind she’d known to expect a conversation like this one, but she’d never anticipated it being so soon.

She caressed her daughter’s cheek and smiled softly at her little girl. “Because you are my daughter and nothing is going to change that. Not the shape of your ears or anything else. You are blood of my blood, and you will forever be mine.”

Hazel eyes then dropped to Delani’s stomach. She placed her hand on the roundness of her belly and looked back up to meet Delani’s gaze. “Will my little brother or sister also have papae’s ears?”

“They will.” Delani also placed her hand on her stomach and felt a series of kicks beat against her palm. Her smile grew as she absently rubbed her belly. “They will be every bit as perfect as you were.”

The little girl accepted Delani’s words with a nod. “Blood of my blood,” she repeated with a seriousness that was beyond her years. Hazel eyes met and held Delani’s. “Mamae?”

“Yes, ma’vherain?”

“Can I have a sweet-roll now?”

Delani stifled a chuckle and shook her head. Brushing back her daughter’s wild, fiery curls, she said, “Dinner will be ready soon and you’ll ruin your appetite.”

A problem with an easy solution. “I’ll have sweet-rolls for dinner.”

Pushing off the bed, which took considerably more effort with the additional weight she now carried, Delani replied with a sighed, “Not in this house you won’t.”
