Description I said Postcard I was a mile stone, but I think this piece is the real milestone in my search for the right colors and atmosphere in that space.
I just love how this piece turned out, just as I envisioned it when I made the initial sketch!

I will make a oil painting of ol' Leviathan as well, and this watercolor/acrylic painting will be a good role model on how I want that one to be in both composition and color-palette!

I have re-found my fondness of my acrylic inks again I must say, they just work the way I wants them to work, in a way that I've actually never had a medium work before! Love em!

Anyway, for those that haven't followed my journey, this is the second go on:

That is my take on the gate that many folks take to hell (this has taken inspiration from a old woodcut series that features Belial as he tries to make a deal with Solomon).
This gate is often depicted as the gaping mouth of Leviathan who is a great sea creature in common myth.
This beast is dear to me as I can find traces of him all over the place, like Ea from the old Sumerian myths or "MidgΓ₯rds ormen" that encircles the world of men in the Norse myths.
Here he gulps in a large amount of souls

Anyway, I really enjoyed making this, and it have given me a better sense of where I want to go with future pieces in the series, so I'm a happy badger! (with a santa hat).

Comments and critz are welcome as always!

Another brilliant piece. I love the creature's design. It's creepy and hellish but features a very slight humorist aspect which most demons as illustrated/painted by pre-Baroque artists shared but which is no longer seen in modern works. I love how the turquoise thing (whatever it is) contrasts with the colors used primarily.

Sounds great that everything is runnin' along over there! Here it's pretty chill as well, I got diagnosed Bipolar this winter, and now I'm getting a sort of pension because of that, so I'm in a pretty stable ground as well
It's great to see all the new stuff you are posting! Really missed seeing new stuff from ya!

The pension sure is sweet, but it's a special type that I can have till I turn 30, so I only have it till next October, after that they'll take a decision if I should continue have a pension or if I'm ready for the workmarket, hopefully I can get some kinda living on my art by then, but time will tell

Yeah.. you should definitely do more colors. They really raise your art to whole new level, I think.

Colors really is like a additional dimension to visual art, and in the production of these pieces going from black n white to color I can really feel the transformation to a higher level, so it's a sweet feeling alright, loving working with colors again and it's good that others enjoy them as well! Thanks

Very cool, good job with the colours here. Reminds me of William Blake and medieval manuscripts, which are both good.

Damned right William Blake and Medieval Manuscripts are good! Great to hear that you get those associations, I really had sepia as a dominant color in this piece, and will use the same setup in coming paintings. Blake was an eager astral traveler, so he is a great inspirational source for these drawings and paintings (he did some cool infernal depictions).
Glad you likes it

Also can I recommend #VI [link] or #XII [link] for the next one?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fagertveit In reply to covenantfighter [2010-06-20 21:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Good recommendations both of them! One problem to make a straight conversion is the details, these paintings is in Postcard size, so I don't have much to go with, but I have thought about takin' a part of XII actually, and VI has many interesting qualities to take inspiration from! (XX is an inside view of that one for example )

Yeah I understand how it could be hard to downsize that to postcard size. But even just a piece of it would be amazing.

Number III is one that I really think would work great as a postcard painting as well, so that will also be a future work, but I will hear you out on this one and make the next painting based on either one of those that you recommended

Your work is DEFINITELY worth all the excitement. I showed my best friend and his reaction was something " holy shit, is that really done by hand?".

I love your work and I know the value of encouragement to help push it even further.
