Description

The morning was brisk and cool on Ren's face as he stepped from his car and then to the entrance of Mercury Stables. The auction hadn't started yet, it was too early, but he was hoping to get a sneak peak at all the pretty faces. Striding down the isle, he peeped in every stall and tried to pet as many noses as he possibly could. He reached the end of the right isle and poked his face into the last stall to see a slumbering figure flopped on the ground. The horse was too still beneath his maroon blanket and Ren was beginning to grow concerned when all of the sudden, the animals sides gave one enormous heave and Ren stumbled back from the stall, choking on the horrible smelling gas that had just been fired at him from this sleeping creatures arse. Ren gagged once more and then he caught the horse standing up out of the corner of his eye and was drawn back to him.

The stallion shook, shavings flying in all directions. Ren laughed as the horse gave a mighty grown and sneezed dust and shavings every which way. The horse was a pretty thing, delicately carved ears that flared at the tips, a well set neck, a fine but broad head, and LEGS FOR DAYS. He checked the card hanging from his stall and was pleased to see the words "FOR AUCTION" in red caps on the top of the card. Reading down the length of the card, he found that the horses name was Daddy Longlegs (this earned a laugh from Ren) aka Daddy, and that he was 6 years old and that he was 16.2hh
It was funny because whenever Ren went to an auction, he was looking for movement, capability. This horse, no doubt, could move well, he thought, but he's such a character...

Ren left Daddy for the concessions stand set for the incoming buyers.(much to the stallions dismay...he had been enjoying the attention) He picked up a cup of apple cider which helped to quell the sting of the cold morning, and then positioned himself conveniently next to the round pen so he could watch the horses. He watched with great interest when he saw Daddy emerge from the barn, practically dragging his frazzled handler behind him. Ren watched curiously as the horse neither seemed to want to run nor strike, but was instead choosing to haul the man holding him towards...a patch of grass? Ren chuckled lightly to himself, thinking that was exactly the kind of character KBEC was looking for.

When he was led to the ring, hundreds of eyes fell upon Daddy. Ren felt a prickle up his spine as he heard several people around him whispering and rustling through their wallets. Being 16, he hadn't brought nearly enough money for a horse of this quality and he became rather crestfallen at the idea of this gorgeous animal going anywhere but home with him.

The announcer picked up his megaphone and used his hand to test it. "HELLO EVERYONE" he boomed, his friendly voice making everyone feel a bit warmer. "WELCOME TO THE CANADIAN-DONSTRUPPER AUCTION" this was met with scattered applause, "FIRST WE HAVE FOR YOU," he turned to Daddy who was staring up at him and tilting his head like some sort of confused puppy, "DADDY LONGLEGS, 6 YEAR OLD, 16.2 HAND STALLION" The announcer motioned for Daddy's handler to begin trotting the horse around, and wide eyed terror swept the poor lad's face before he began. Daddy was extremely excited, jigging and dancing and carrying on besides the terrified man. Ren admired the way the stallion flicked his toes with every stride and how he held his head high and proudly, though he couldn't help but sympathize with the boy besides him.

The announcer eventually began calling for people who were interested to come and hop on, see what they thought. Ren jumped at the chance. Surely just sitting on this powerful animal would make him feel less awful that he didn't have the money to buy him? Or it might do the exact opposite...

When it was his turn, Ren led Daddy to the mounting block and hopped atop him, speaking quietly to him in an attempt to get him to settle down. Ren wasn't certain what the stallion could and couldn't do, so he just began with a bit of leg yielding (the best he could do in a round pen) and then all 3 gaits. He was happy to see how well the horse responded to his leg and that he was feather-light in the bridle save for being a bit fussy with his mouth. Ren imagined himself galloping cross country on this wonderful horse...the paneled white fence vanished, as did the bramble outside, and he was soaring...flying...

The announcer coughed loudly into the meghaphone which dissolved that daydream. Apparently he had taken a bit too long. Ren gave a sheepish grin at the glowering announcer who was looking pointedly from Ren to the growing line of people who wanted to give Daddy a shot. Ren exited the arena without a fuss, and then headed back to the concession stand to drown his sorrow that he couldn't have this horse in apple cider and gingersnaps.

Ahhh I had SO MUCH FUN writing and drawing this :000
I decided to give Daddy a silly personality much like a horse I used to own is like ^^ a crude but adorable sense of humor, and an almost puppy like demeanor.
Btw, if I were to change his name it'd be to Leg-endary  but I probably won't¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and if he came to my barn his theme song would definitely be Legs by Naomi Smalls
