Description
This is a rather quick, experimental piece of the white Siderian (northern big cats) named Stian. This month I wanted to do a few traditional pieces (one more to go) of Stian since it’s in August that he came to me (2009) and I saw that as a good opportunity to spend some time with him.
See here his reference sheet:
I also took the chance to experiment with watercolours a bit more now that there is still proper day light. I find traditional art with artificial light during the dark winters quite tricky. Especially colours as I have no white light.
I found an old holiday photo and loosely based the background on it. I wanted the painting to look ‘spontaneous’ and lively, so I did most of the background quite quickly - later I added some details with pencils.
I’m still a bit of a n00b with watercolours as a medium though. I have used water colours before, but to use the full potential of this medium takes some practice. I particularly like pieces in which the paint did most of the work and that you can get beautiful results by just guiding it to the right place. I tried some of the lift-off techniques to create these blurry spots that show depth-of-field. Not sure how well that came out, but I quite like it (except that I messed up the angle a bit). Some of the white spots I did by scraping the paper with a scalpel. The others are messy acrylic paint splatters.
Medium: Van Gogh water colours, Prisma premier soft core pencils, white gel pens, white Amsterdam Acrylic paint. I don’t have the cover of the paper anymore but I believe it’s cold pressed 300 gsm
DON'T COPY/USE ANYTHING OF THIS!
Don’t use these any siderians as avatar or whatever to represent some other character (e.g. in role play games)! They are who they are and they will not represent someone else. It’s ok to use some siderian images (they are semi-open species actually - note me if you want to know more), but always refer to them as what and WHO they are.
